Once the season starts here they are gone. You're lucky to have a crack at them. I've never seen them on the first day of season. Only thru the summer and during the first weekend of dove. I think the numerous shots push them south fast.

They can be seen around the neighborhood daily. Have yet to see one in the field.

I lived in Abilene from 99-07. I started seeing BBWD there around 2002 or so, mostly near the golf course lakes. Each year more and more appeared around town. Most evenings during the summers I would see 15-20 flying through our neighborhood and we were several miles from any significant water or golf courses. I would image there are thousands around town now, the lake at Fairway Oaks CC can have hundreds on it at a time. They would leave town in early November but once I did encounter a family group in mid December in a field with sheet water.
Very few wood ducks in Abilene.

Very few wood ducks in Abilene. Huh, grew up on Fairway and never saw a one. I hunt South of town and have never seen one either. There are some wood ducks at Lake Abilene, but they have only had it open for hunting for one or two years and its closed now.

They used to hang out on the west side of the lake (around Augusta and Woodlake Dr). The ones I commented on in the field were on Iberis Rd next to the game processing place. Rememeber they are cavity nesters so they will mostly likely be in town vs areas of mesquite or pasture land.

When my gf went back to work from lunch there was a adult and three ducklings in the covered parking garage in the middle of downtown.
