I imagine...and understand -- Super Duty here, with a V10 Triton engine. Gets about 12MPG, downhill, outa gear...

I was talking about "Da Sticka"...

Oh that yea I got a sticker I hear ya 10 mpg with a tail wind. 454 seemed like a good idea when gas was 99 cents a gallon. That lasted all of a week and jumped to a buck 50 I believe.

I love my Winchester 94 Ranger. I think the Winchesters look better. But my friends marlins get no complaints.

Marlins are always recommended the most
but I like my Win '94AE also.
It's very easy to carry all day even with
a scope mounted. I used a friends 336 once
and it was a good gun, just felt kind of
heavy and too thick. I keep reading about
how the 336 is "stronger". Don't really know
what that's about. Both are plenty strong
for any ammo you're gonna buy and I don't
know anyone that loads "HOT" for 30-30.

I'd recomend going and handling both. Pick
whichever feels the best in YOUR hands and
comes to YOUR shoulder the best. They are
both great rifles, tried and true.

Only during spawn, otherwise they're too deep.

I have a JC Higgins Model 45 (originally made by Marlin Firearms), a variant of the Marlin Glenfield 30A. I wouldn't trade it for a new one...no way.

Ok, I've read about the hammer offsets, do they come either right or left hand offset, or do you have to by a mod for them?

Last spring I picked up a left handed savage in .308 from Cabelas. I like it alot and it is my primary rifle, but that Marlin goes to the lease with me every time in the event of a malfuction on the savage, or if I want to stalk.

Hard to beat a Marlin for value.

Kingfisher, here's a hammer extension, hope it answeres your questions.

Why is that? Is the 94 shorter than the 336s?

a bit shorter, quite a bit lighter. i think the winchester is 6 pounds unloaded, the 336 is closer to 7 1/2 or eight

It's just an extension attached to the hammer, and reverses for either a left- or right-handed shooter.

By the way, I was at Dick's Sporting Goods at The Parks Mall in Arlington, and they are sold out of the $299 Marlin package rifles, and not sure when more are on the way. (The sales guy told me they've sold more than two dozen in the last month; they can't keep 30-30 Leverevolution in stock, either.)

Before heading out there, I'd give the hunting department a call at 817-987-4800.

Well, I called Dick's and Academy. Dick's said they should have some in next week. Academy has the 336W for 314 w/o scope. Guess I'll keep looking or wait for Dick's to get them in.

when i purchased my 30-30 about a year ago, i called around alot and from what i got out of everyone, the differance in the 336a and the 336w, is that the w is cheaper wood and has a barrel band and sling, but is otherwise the same. i got the w and love it, but kinda wish i would have gotten the 336a. i paid $330 after tax.

i can understand why people think the 94's are weak, im not saying they are, but most people relate "lighter" with "weaker", and the action feels loose compared to a marlin. and they have more moveing parts and are harder to clean. since it is lighter, it also kicks harder.
just dont ask a group which one is more accurate....you'll have a war on your hands.

here's a good hog gun too.....

My dad bought a Marlin 336W for me when I first began hunting. It is an awesome rifle that I will cherish forever. I have taken deer, turkey, coyotes, even varmits like skunks and squirrels. I would highly recommend the 336W to anyone. Good luck!

The first rifle I ever fired was my father's model 94..knocked me back about 2ft. and kinda scared the s**t outta me. I love the 94 IMO it's just prettier than the Marlin. I took my first deer with a 336 in .35 Rem. so I have good feelings about that rifle as well. Go over to Cabela's and pick one, they're both excellent. There is usually a bunch of used Marlin's in the rack.

Hey, not to hijack this thread but I have a question regarding a Winchester M94 pre '64. I'm having extraction problems. It seems that the little ramp that the extractor rides up on to clip over the cartridge head is badly worn and is not allowing the extractor claw to go high enough to engage the rim. What to do what to do???

Should I worry about fixing it or should I just mothball it?

i owned a 94 and loved it, but i would have to side with the marlin as being a stronger action, it just feels more solid. also, the ones i have seen shoot more accuratley. notice, i did't say better. the 94 is more handier though and makes a better walking around gun, i think

I read the posts, and see the words...but I can't figure out ..WHY? Why does anyone want a 30/30? If you want to limit yourself, why not use a muzzloader? But that's a better gun than a 30/30. If you're talking "brush gun", we all know that's a myth. I think it's the Lucas McCain thing...flicking that lever action and watching the shells fly out the side...all the while humming the theme song to "The Rifleman". The only good thing I've noticed on the 30/30..is that heavy front sight...you can get it under the hub cap and pry it off when you get a flat tire.
