I'm considering buying a 30-30, which brand/model do you like over other ones. I'm left handed and read on Marlin's site they come with the hammer canted to one side or the other for scope mounting. How does this benefit the shooter?
Before you ask, I already have a .270. 1. I've always wanted a 30-30, 2. The area I hunt has a lot of brush and I plan on using it to hunt hogs with.

Marlin hands down. I prefer the 1895cb model with the octagon barrel

Around $300 to $350 for a new one and about $250 for a good used one.

Yes sir I do and I just saw a 1895CB on craigs list for $300.00 Team Hillbilly is right on on his pricing and I know where there is a 336W with a forward mounted scout scope for around $300.00. Very clean gun worth the money even though its a W model.
I think I also know where a very clean 336 is, I'll check tomorrow.

By the way, the best ammo I have found for the marlin 30/30 has been the Winchester Silver Tips. I love em, and they will take the wack out of a deer or anything else rather well.

I bought a marlin 336ss a while back and I really like it. Its the stainless steel version with the walnut stock.

You might want to check out the Hornady LeveRevolution ammo. Lots of good stuff being written about it, supposed to turn a 30-30 into a legitimate 200 yard game rifle.

i owned a winchester 94 for several years, shot a few deer with it, but i would say go withthe 336, they are all around more solid, and i think more accurate too. if you were on horse back or carried a gun in your truck then i would go withthe 94. also makes a decent self defense gun

Why is that? Is the 94 shorter than the 336s?

As a fellow leftie, I'd recommend the Marlin anytime.
The hammer extension can be repositioned for either a left- or right-handed shooter, so don't let that concern you. A bigger issue might be the fact that Marlins side-eject straight out to the right, but I've never found that to be a problem for me; I don't even notice the brass moving past me.
If you're looking for deal on a new Marlin, Dick's Sporting Goods has them for $299, including a 4x scope. Check it out, and good luck!

Yep...Marlin all the way. I just got one a few weeks back (gift from the wife)  It is the 336A. Like NathanaelGreene said...I got it at Dick's Sporting Goods in Frisco for $299 w/ a 4-9X40 scope. I got one without the scope mounted b/c I wanted open sights for hog hunting. Have not got to shoot it yet(dang BACKWOODS  ) but I love the look and feel. Real solid gun. Good luck

My .270 is a left handed bolt action. I've been in the AF for over 12 years and shoot M-16, M-4, M60 etc. and really haven't had a problem shooting any of them, well, with the exception of the 60, the links aren't ejected like the brass is so you have to shoot it right handed. That was fun to adjust to, seeing how I'm also left eye dominate.

I prefer the Marlin. I've used a 30AS the last couple of years and like the feel of it, plus the short length is nice inside a box blind. The 30AS is a budget model 336 with cheaper wood, no checkering, but the same action and barrel. Marlins are heavier than the Winchesters, but much stronger.

I have a 30AS and love it- I'm a rightie. My bother-in-law has a 336 that he and his youngest son shoot- they are both lefties. He has looked at other deer rifles, but takes the 336 over them all the time.
