How far away from your deerstand do you have your campfire. Wondering if the campfire will spook the deer. Let me know your thoughts on this.

Closest stand is about 1/4 mile away from camp, but we're on 4500 acres.
My wife's only thing is it can't stare at her when she is eating or sleeping!

We are on about 300 acres if that makes a difference.

We are on 264 acres and the nearest stand from our camp is 1/2 mile. I don't wear my hunting clothes when I am sitting around the campfire in the evenings so I don't see a problem. We are in a rural area where people burn their trash all the time so I don't think the smell of a fire is anything new to the deer. JMHO

I can smell breakfast cooking from one of my stands, and it's one of the most productive stands on the whole place (500 acres). It's probably 75 yards from camp, down a power-line right of way.

I personally do not think campfires spook deer, it's what goes on around those campfires that does....

I would use a electric or gas fireplace log in camp. That way they not smell the smoke... Just kidding.! But I don't think it makes a big difference. I'm confused as to how deer were killed before scent cover and cammo came out on the market?
I feed Indian Corn, the deer really seem to like it and stay at the feeder longer......and longer....!

Anything out of the norm will spook them until it becomes a normal routine. That means all year round, not just hunting season.

Funny this should come up. I have begun product development on "Smoke No Mo" it is a chemical specifically developed for hunters. It is an all natural, environmentally friendly, and completely biodegradable spray that is applied in a liberal fashion to all logs before they go on the campfire to completely eliminate 100% of all smoke and campfire odor! This innovative product will be available to the hunting public in the fall of 2010 but if you act now, and PM me your credit card information I will send you our 4 oz. Smoke No Mo for only three easy payments of $19.95. BUT THATS NOT ALL! Call to day and I'll include a second bottle for the car absolutely free! What's that? You want more? Ok, you'll also get a trial size Butt Smoke No Mo. It works on your ciggarettes! That's one 4 oz. Smoke No Mo plus a second bottle and the Butt Smoke No Mo all for only three easy payments if $19.95 plus shipping and handeling. Act fast before this deal goes UP IN SMOKE!!!!

A friend of mine hunts in Graham and they have around 100 acres and they have a stand less than 100 yards from camp. They always have a fire and they ALWAYS see deer. You just never know about these types of things. I think a fire is a must at any lease.

Now can you do it in an Aussie accent? If you can, you should raise your price and scream while you make your pitch.

Smoke make's a good cover scent and it's a smell the deer are used to. I never use cover scent, stand in the smoke, step in a few cow pile's and crush up some green cedar and rub yourself down. Work's fine for me.

I don't care about whether it spooks the deer, since our blinds are right at a mile from camp, but I just hate smelling like campfire. Unless it's just unbearably cold, I don't even like using one when we go camping.

I'm confused as to how deer were killed before scent cover and cammo came out on the market? Good point. I still havent figured that out? People now-a-days will buy anything. I have shot more deer in Wranglers and a workshirt than I have with camo. Deer dont care what your wearing nor do they care if your in their travel path. They will go through if they want to go through. People need to relax on "Scent Killers" and "Scent Lock" Camo.Im just saying..

YEP, i'll be in my jeans(the only camo i'm taking) my brown carhartt jacket, and a green shirt on the first day and the only thing that will change is the shirt color. if your in a stand they can't see you and if you go in before daylight they can't see you. why all the camo if the deer don't see you anyway?

Shoot, this is the first year that I've been on the lease in Menard that there hasn't been a burn ban, we pretty much gave up on the whole campfire thing, maybe we will crank one up this year, but I do not think it is a man card issue...

The Campfire is probably one of my favorite things about deer camp. That is where the camaraderie comes in. Telling lies about what you saw and hope to see. Listening to jokes. Its what made me fall in love with "deer camp."
I have also heard that since burning wood is a natural smell that it does make a good cover scent over the detergents and stuff. While the deer make snort at it, because they smell it, they do not necessarily spook because of it.

We ALWAYS have a fire in east texas, and rarely have one in West texas. I just wear different clothes and enjoy the campfire...
