Two guys up at the lease this morning saw a red wolf. It ran right underneath one of the guys stand chasing a rabbit. It was seen a third time about an hour ago while they were putting corn out. they drove straight at it on the pipeline and it didnt run until they got a hundred yards from it. I didnt know we had wolves in east texas and i gotta say im not to thrilled about the idea. I thought they were mistaking it for a fox or coyote but they said it was almost a big as a deer. Has anyone else ever seen a wolf in east texas?

I know a guy who lives outside of Tyler that says he's seen them there.

There are wolves in East tx. I was on a lease between Alto and Rusk for several years. We saw a couple over the years.. about twice the size of a coyote.. We werent too worried about it, we were more concerned about the mountain lion that had been spotted in the area..

We've got black ones on our centex lease. Last fall we found a chewed on fawn about the same time the rancher said he'd seen a wolf. I had a bad photo of it on a trail cam, but deleted it before we put 2 & 2 together. The neighboring ranch shot a black one a few years back and hung it up on their high fence out by the road. They're around.

Most likely what is being seen are COYDOGS....they are a mixed breed between a coyote and a dog. These coydogs are much more common particularly in east Texas.

Check with TPWL and see what they say about it.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

We used to have some out at the East Texas property in the late 70's. I haven't heard or seen them since.

Back in the early 60's, my father killed a very large yote/wolf. The TPWL biologist took the head and sent it off to be examined. The report came back, it was just a large yote. The report also said there were not any wolves in Texas at that time but did say the possiblity of some crossing into Texas from Mexico was possible.

My Grandpa killed one (grey) back in the middle 70's on Sandy Creek outside of Zavalla while deer hunting. A few years later some students from SFA came to him asking did he remember the days way back about wolves in East Texas and he pulled out the picture of it and they couldn't believe it. They said there aren't any wolves anymore from what they read. He told them they shouldn't believe what they read.
I saw one I think it was 2004 off of the Concord Church road east of Zavalla on NF land off of Sam Rayburn. It walked right under my stand. I had just got up the tree in my climber and went to pull my bow up and I didn't secure it good to the rope and it fell. So I just sat there looking at the woods and 5 minutes later here comes the wolf. I was pretty deep in the woods.

I called up and killed a very large "coyote" about 10 years ago, when I was 15, and it was the huge. To this day I have not seen or killed one that big. I have alway wondered if it was a wolf or mix bred something.
