If the kid shoots the .223 comfortably, let him shoot that. A well placed shot with a smaller round is 10 times better than a gut shot deer with the SKS...

I second this, I practiced my a$$ off with an open sighted SKS and decent ammo and the best I could do at a hundred yards was about 2" groups.

The vital area of a deer at 100 yds is 8-10 inches. 4 inch grouping is plenty. A lot of deer guns won't shoot any better than my SKS which will shoot 3 inch groups even with iron sites and my worn out eyes. That said, shot placement is critical with low power rounds like the 7.62x39 and .223. If your kiddo knows where to put the bullet and can hit a 6" circle at 100 yd, I'd say he's good to go with the SKS and good soft point ammo.

I have taken multiple deer @ 100-150 yds with my sks and 9 out of ten times they never leave where they stand, why have to track them. The 123 gr. soft point just lays the smack down on them. Also they have a better scope mount now , but some non perm. locktite keeps all nuts snug

I used to hunt exclusively with an SKS because it was all I could afford at one time and when going into the swamp, where I grew up, no one cared if it got knocked around or a little wet from the bottom of the boat.

That being said, it's not the best caliber and not that accurate past 100 yards. But back then, the furthest shot I took was about 60 yards.

I agree with using the .223, most of the SKS rifles that I have shot have had accuracy issues. They are simply not designed with tight tolerances. See if he can hit a coke can at that range the majority of the time. If so, I might consider using the SKS.
