Hey I noticed a few of Yall hunt in Eastland Co. This is my first year on this place. I am trying to determine when the rut usually starts around here. I am just outside of Carbon. Any help would be appreciated. Game cams are showing deer, hogs and a pack of wild dogs. anyone else have any issues with the dogs? I had doe come flying by me on sat, w/ her hair on fire, slobbering and panting like she was about to die. I never saw what was chasing her, but I did see the pack of dogs early the next am. We have dog and yote tracks all over the place.
Thanks,.

I hunt outside of carbon as well, and I dont know when the rut starts....never really noticed it last year. Kill those dogs... unless you want them to run all your deer my way ...LOL. I have noticed the bucks gesturing towards each other right now...it looks like it is not too far away actually. Hogs are getting thicker by the month too...kill them too. Jut set up a corral trap for them.

Thanks, for the info.. we have seven dogs that I have seen.. they are on the hitlist for sure.. the deer in the pics look scared.. so we will waylay as many of the dogs as we can.. The hogs havent been real consistent, but I will set the trap for them anyway, the guy that runs the cattle will check it for me. the only bucks we have seen wont past the muster on the 13in rule, except for a freaky little spike.. Good luck!

Hunt hard.. rut was early season.. i think around thanksgiving..and get rid of the wild dogs.. for some reason people take their strays and release them out in that area. I had a lease in morton valley just outside of the town of eastland and took this buck... also have you seen pics of the carbon buck taken last season? a true monster in your backyard

We have had our place since 1989 and the prerut will start in another week or so and the main rut will be around Thanksgiving. When we were low fenced, I killed my best bucks on Thanksgiving week. Good Luck to all! We are lucky this year...no acorns on our place.
If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.

Nothing even close to that on my HF place which has been managed for 13 years! That buck seems to have different genetics than the deer around my place. First off, never have seen a deer that wide. Also never have seen one with drop tines either. Eastland is definately not known for Large bucks. I have only heard of 2 that were that big and that is one of them. Does anyone know if they had trail cam pics of him? Scooter, are you on the Carbon Wildlife management area?

Just talked to the guy that runs the cattle out here and he told me that pack of dogs killed two show goats and attacked the woman that lives there. It's on! Allthe guys that run cattle out here are running the roads and checking their calves. I will have my .17 handy

I personally have had better luck and seen more activity with the secondary rut, which seems to hit the 3rd week of December. I think the hunting pressure is somewhat decreased by that time and the acorns are pretty much gone or soured.
However, I will still be in the blind the week of Thanksgiving.
Good luck to all the Eastland hunters!
