I know there are several target load or "match" loads for this round. Do any of yall hunt with the match loads or have one that is very consistant? Factory only no reloads.
Whats your fav round for hunting? 168gr

178gr A-Max... Hornady Match if you want factory.
Berger is good but you have to reload.

I wish I could remember what I used last year to take a small cull buck, it was a head shot at 175 and I told myself then that I had found the perfect load for the 308........now this deer season I cant remember what it was.
But anything can die from any kind of head shot, exept Chuck Norris.

I hunt with a Ruger 308 and I have used 180gr Winchester and 165gr Federal and get really tight groups at 100yrds with consistency. I recently started hunting so can only give you my results for the last three years. Each deer has dropped where it stood.

My personal hunting favorite is the 150gr. Hornady SST. Super Accurate out of my Tikka T3 Lite. Hard hitting and very good expansion. It uses Hornady Match brass as well. I used to use 168gr. Winchester Silver tips until I tried the Hornady's. Try them and see for yourself.

I also bought a couple of boxes of the mid level Federal blue box 150 gr. rounds on sale, and they were shockingly accurate (1/2" 3 shot group with 2 of the shots in one ragged hole).

Every gun is dif. It's trial and error. I have one that likes the Winchester 165gr. Fail Safe, One that likes Hornandy 168gr. Light Mag, and one that doesn't care

When I first purchase my Kimber .308 I did some research and read about how Federal Fusion shot so good in a variety of rifles. Something about how the fusion process of federals bullet gets rid of micro voids between the lead and the jacket. I never had to try anything else. All groups we're from 1" or smaller. I bought several boxes of them. I shoot 150 grain bullets in my .308. From what I've read they are a little tougher then a cup and core bullet, some people compared them to a Nosler accubond in toughness.

3 of us on our lease all use 168 A-Max. Slaps deer HARD. Also the most accurate factory load I have ever put in my AR10's.

Find what your gun likes not what the magazine editors or experts here like.
My Savage bolt action likes Federal Premium 165's Sierra Game Kings, my Remington 750 likes Federal blue box cheapo 150's better

Find what your gun likes not what the magazine editors or experts here like. X2 Have 3 Ruger 25/06 all shoot their best with different ammo. One will NOT hold a group with Federal Premiums when the other will shoot a quarter size group.

I've always shot Winchester out of my model 70 when it was pointed at deer. I've shot a number of things out of it at paper and I was always satisfied with accuracy and performance of Winchester Silvertip and Ballistic tip ammo at 150 grains. I'm not likely to change for that rifle.
I've shot a bunch of stuff out of my Savage, which prefers heavier rounds. The 165 grain spitzer boat tail fusion rounds shot well.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.
