Anybody plant turnips on a yearly basis? If so, what do you use to cover the seed after you throw it. I understand it only has a planting depth of 1/4". I have heard this is a tremendous attractant for the month of January.

I planted some, but it rotted in the field. The deer and hogs did not touch it. Had some huge turnips also.

You have to turn a few over for the deer so they know what they are. After that watch out. I use a light drag on mine, like a piece of chain link fence. Mix the seeds in with my oats and wheat. The 1st year I did it, I just threw them on top and I had quite a few come in.

we hook a harrow behind the fourwheel and roll all are seed in makes it look like you put it in with a planter and in east tx they tear the turnips up

They were big enough to be sticking out of the ground. I had some that were about 8 inches around.

I plowed with my 9 1/2' tandem then slung the turnip seed with my four wheeler feeder and covered with a drag behind the pickup. Got four inches last Sunday and already starting to sprout. I mixed them in with my oats and clover. I heard that the leaves are bitter to the deer until the first frost and then it changes the chemicals in the leaves and they become sweet, that is why they make for a good late season plant. Just my two cents.

Should be able to broadcast them on top of freshly disc ground and the rain will pound them in to an acceptable depth. With small seeds like turnips, the fear is always that you plant them too deep.

I used to use them all the time and the deer ate every one of them. I quit using them because I never could get them at the time I was planting wheat. The seeds are tiny.

After I disked the ground to cover the wheat, I got on my 4 wheeler, sitting backward, with a bermuda grass slinger, and let my Wife drive. I planted about 3 or 4 pounds over a couple of acres and didn't bother covering them.

I wouldn't expect much on untilled ground.

LOL.........years ago when we used to keep a garden out at the property we had just finished planting everything and were getting ready to leave. My granddad forgot about the turnip seeds he had brought but we were too tied to go back and plant them so he just opens the package and throws them on the ground.

I think every !@#$ one of those things came up.......had them running out our ears!!!
