Went to my place in southern Oklahoma thursday for opening day of bow season. I saw quite a few deer and one great looking buck. It wasn't his rack but his pelt that was awesome. He is only 1 1/2 year old so his coat is silky smooth and still has that redish color to it. His throat patch is very bright and has a second one lower on the neck. His belly hair comes up high in the front as well. The circles around his eyes make him look like a clown, close to an inch of white around both eyes. His rack was small but uniform.
Problem comes with seeing way more than 100 pigs over the weekend. It's a trade off. the more pressure we put on the hogs the less we see, but we also see less deer. We left them alone this summer and now they are literally everywhere. I hate em!
I should be huntin'!

I feel your pain. Quick trip out to our place, revealed toppled feeders, and area's where they've been rooting, that looked like a meteor crashed into the ground.
Makes me wanna start launching hand grenades at the bastages...

Put pens around your deer feeders and have a few select feeders that the pigs can eat from. Start building a trap around the feeder and catch their sorry a$$... If you keep the feeder running all the time, you can go set the trap and catch every time. It takes money to build a trap like this but you know you will trap pigs every time.

One thing that I've learned is that if you kill one hog, 100 come to the funeral! Killing hogs simply creates a black hole that sucks others into it. I put my thinking cap on and went back over what I've learned through observation after being around them 48 years.
I restricted the food source. I fenced all my feeders with 48 X 48 pens made from hog panels. In the winter, I plant clover in my food plots. In the spring, I plant lablab. Hogs won't mess with either.
I kill sows. I'm always ready and I kill sows. I let the big boars go. Sows do not want their young around the big boys and young boars don't want their arse whooped. Killing a big boar creates a black hole that sucks sows and young boars into the space.
Maximize your shooting. Use plenty of gun and never take a shot on one that will not result in killing another. I don't care where I hit them, as long as I hit them. I've killed 4 hog with one bullet a number of times. The best yet is 8 with a Marlin chambered in 450 Marlin. Body count is what matters.
Always take the shot (if downrange is safe). I've made some exceptional shots that I did not think would work.

I have been after hogs for the last month and still can't get them. I guess thats a good thing but man I have been wanting to plug a few. Too bad you have so many around.

Okay.. I should trap everything but the big boars?? is this correct??? I'm not sure MrRoachie, all I know is that you cannot clean them out. Others will take their place sure as shooting. I rather have a couple of big old boars ruling the rooster and keeping things to their liking than a whole passel of sows and pigs. I don't see the two groups associating.

Always take the shot (if downrange is safe). I've made some exceptional shots that I did not think would work. There is no posssible way to restrict the food source as the Red river is our southern boarder, Walnut Bayou runs through the middle of our place and another no-name creek runs east to west between Walnut Bayou and the Red river creating a mile long island. All to say we are full of river bottom and food source is plentiful even with the hogs eating everything in sight. Even at my hunting stands (which have no feeders) I can't manage to get away from them. Also the pigs here will in fact eat clover, haven't tried Lablab. The nutrition up there creates a different diet for the deer as well. I have hunted both sides of the river and neither side has shown much interest in protein or roasted soybeans. Everywhere else I have hunted it was a busy job just keeping the feeders (free choice) from running out.
I should be huntin'!

why intentionally gut shoot anything? I'm not by any means a tree hugger, in fact I'm an avid dog hunter, and kill pigs all the time, but I'll never understand why somebody would intentionally gut shoot an animal, even a hog. If you don't want to deal with butchering, I got it. but at least end it quick.
I don't know how to get rid of all your hogs, but if you want to cut down on their numbers a lot, get in touch with a local trapper or dog hunter. (dog hunter if your place is big enough)

I'm with ya man.....I mean honestly how hard is it to shoot it in the head or heart/lung area, and then just drag it off in the brush? it's not..... I would consider anyone who gut shoots ANY animal intentionally to be a slob hunter.

I just bought a 308 rifle and saw this posting. I'm going to try and line up several hogs or at least two so that the bullet will hopefully pass through one and hit the other resulting in two kills.
Question: Which style bullet will best do this...possibly a full metal jacket bullet or what. Please tell me and I'll get loaded for hogs.
Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

I know they can't be far from us, but in 3+ years of hunting and running the cameras we've only seen 2, and they must have been traveling through. Knock on wood. I guess having a virtually wide open lease does have some advantages.
Picture removed. clowns creep me out.

Those who don't have hogs now will some have them. They are very destructive and should be shot on site. I have ask many landowers to allow me to kill them on there land. I truly understand when they say no thanks because they don't want a stranger on there property. In many cases they beg me a year later to come kill some hogs. I am here to tell you that the longer you wait the worst it will get. Hogs will eat anything and everything. Shot them when you see them and spare no one. A sow can have 3 litters a year. Kill them now are cry about it later.
