Watch my 5 part video series on youtube, its on long range revolver shooting with iron sights. Part four has the shooting the others are how too and the results. ( http://www.youtube.com/texasfivegun) Take some liquid paper, a needle, a brass "tooth brush" and a beach chair if you can find one. Use the liquid paper on your front sight. Make a line with the needle to use as a reference and brush of the dried paper with the brass brush to start over if your marks are wrong or when your finished. The chair I am talking about puts your butt about 4" off the ground and lets you lean back. You pull your legs up put your hands/wrists between your knees. It works better "much better" for me than a bench rest or any thing else. I have a Caldwell HAMMR machine rest and I can out shoot it with my chairs. You must have "0" flinch for this, a good spotter helps and if you can get the sun behind you the bullets are easy to see in flight. You may run out of front sight with a long barrel, short to medium barrels and tall front sights are easier to work with. I have never shot a 500 or 460 S&W but we have found with 500 & 475 Linebaughs, 414 & 445 Supermags, 454 Casull, and 44 Remington Magnum. A heavy for caliber cast lead bullet works best. A gas check is easier to see in flight. A high velocity is not needed. About 1200 FPS is what we use the most. Good shooting and Good Luck! Chad
If you take all the guns off the street you still will have a crime problem, whereas if you take the criminals off the street you cannot have a gun problem.

Sounds like someone else is reading some Elmer Kieth too.

psycho0819 We must be close. Kaufman is about 7 miles NE as the crow flys. Yes I have a few of Mr Kieths books.

Long range pistol shooting has been around for many years, IHMSA competetion is a sight to watch for anyone that likes watching the impossible done. The better shooters can hit 8 out of 10 targets the size of coffee cups at 200+ yards with iron sights and nothing to rest against or sit in. It is amazing what can be done with revolvers, contenders and bolt action handguns and even semi-autos in the 22 competetion.

"Hell I Was There" is one of my favorite books ever...
I agree with you on the beach chair- I'd never actually thought off using one, but I've been leaning against a tree and resing my hands between my knees for years now. It really is the best "all terain" shooting stance. Never could get that Creedmore thing down, always thought I was going to blow a hunk out of my leg...
I've always been interested in longe range pisoleering, but I'll have to get my short game down first. That "0 flinch" you mentioned is not as easy to achieve as one might think...
That is a fine looking Bisley in your sig...

I'm about half way thru "Hell, I was there" right now. Very interesting reading. That man went thru more in a year or two than most people have to deal with in their whole life. It's funny too. My wife is from Missoula, Mt. I'll read excerpts from the book to her, and she swears his vernacular is the same as her grandfather's (who was in the same generation, well maybe 10-15 yrs apart) who was born and raised in Missoula, and served as Sheriff until he retired. I think I remember reading a book by Elmer Keith on something about long range shooting with the 44 mag. I have always wanted to see something like that in person.
BTW: Nice looking gun leather for your pistol. Where did you get it?

KC - Thanks. That Bisley is a 500 Linbaugh with elephant ivory grips, built by David Clements.
tx_basser - I made the rig. It took some time sewing it by hand but it was easy to make.
I will make a new post on both of them soon.

This post caught my interest pretty cool. I was raised in Missoula, MT so I thought that was a funny coincidence. You dont hear of many people from there. Anybody ever taken any game shooting long range with a pistol?

I shot a turtle off a log at 93 yards with a Smith 686.
I couldn't do it again if my life depended on it- total, complete fluke...

I took out a trotting coyote at a later measured 122 yards with the same 500 Linebaugh that's used in the videos. It was off hand and with my shooting partner spotting for me. He screamed as he rolled over and was dead by the time we got to him. The bullet broke both front shoulder's, made a finger sized hole going in and a golf ball sized hole going out.
