I've never done it. But in Africa, I had a guide tell me to do it. He said it was a high percentage shot because it will usually take out the spine or femoral artory. As you saw though, it will usually requires a 2nd shot. So I just won't go there no matter how bad I want the trophy.

BTW.. he called it the "Texas Heart Shot" which I took offense to.

Other opinions?

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Not the first time I have heard that term used on that kind of shot. Seen it done a few times. Not a shot everyone should consider taking unless you know your gun very well. I did it once on a ram. I was getting tired of chasing this stupid thing over the hills again and again. So when it stopped for a few seconds at the top of the fourth hill at 225 yds I got a good rest on a boulder and took the shot. Dropped it in its tracks. Not a shot I would ever attempt with a bow or a crossbow by any means but with my 7mm-08 I'm pretty comfortable shooting it out to 300 yds on various game.

I've done it, as it was the only shot I could get on the deer. I don't like it but will do it given the right circumstances.

I have always called it the reverse brain shot.

If you take all the guns off the street you still will have a crime problem, whereas if you take the criminals off the street you cannot have a gun problem.

lol, I shot a buck like that when I was a kid...(well younger than I am now). It was when you would go a full season and wouldn't see a forked horn buck on one of the leases my dad was on. I saw one, a seven point, and he tried like heck to run, but the ol' 30-nought-6 hit him about 1/2" below the bullseye and it blew through his chest. DRT!

No worse than anything else to me. I guess if the smell upsets your stomach easily then it could be a problem. Depends on if you gut your game or not or how do gut them for that matter. I didn't worry about that on my sheep.

But on deer I hang them head down and just get the back loins. I leave all the guts inside. I'm not interested in the front loins or the ribs. After I get the front shoulders, the back straps, back loins, cut the head off, cut the back bone and let the bottom part fall. The back legs usually stay together and cut those off last and put them into the 150 qt ice chest with the rest of the meat.

It's no problem that way. But that shot usually destroys the back loins or parts of them. I've seen it take go all the way thru from a 180 gr Sierra Game King from a 30-06 on a whitetail before.

I've had to make this shot before, but just aimed a little higher and shot them in the back of the head. I am not sure I'd want to take the risk of ruining the backstraps, tenderloins, and possibly part of the hams.

I shot a spike buck that way one time. He was drinking at a creek. I walked up behind him and put a shot about 1/2" from the exit. I found the slug along the outside of his rib cage. He dropped like a rock, face first into the creek.

Shooting an animal through the butt may drop them in their tracks but here's my opinion. My son once shot a doe perfectly behind the shoulder. It was the absolute textbook, broadside shot right behind the shoulder. Deer ran a short distance and piled up, DRT. As I loaded the doe on the back of the truck, I noticed this horrible, gut smell. When I cleaned the doe and opened her up, the stench hit me full in the face. Here's what happened. I checked the shot placement and it was perfect. Problem was, the shot hit a rib broadside and turned the bullet back towards the intestines and shredded everything going backwards. The tiny pieces of bullet ripping through the intestines and then around the meat, took fecal matter all throughout the carcass. We lost that doe while in the cooler on ice and water. The stink was terrible.

Personally, I'd never shoot an animal like that that I intended to eat. If you're strictly after the horns, that may be a different matter. Still a wanton waste of meat to me though.

Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

I would not hesitate a milisecond to shoot one right on the base of the tail if it was a buck of a lifetime and it was the only shot he offered! If you hit him square in the tail bone, I'll gurantee you he will break down and is done for!!!!!!!

I'm sorry if this pisses some of you off, but if I'm worried about the meat, I'll just shoot me another doe! I wouldn't do this on just any old buck but if it was a truly once in a lifetime buck, he'd have an azz ache I'll assure you.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
