It looks like I'll be alternating weekends this November at the lease. Should I keep my hog trap set, knowing I won't be back for 7-8 days? It doesn't sound ethical, but has anyone left a pig in a trap for a week with no water? Thanks!

Being on a lease can you get the landowner to water for you? If not I wouldn't set the trap when I was not there. A fawn could get in it and die. Even as bad as the hog problem is, for one person to see a dying hog in a trap could lead to animal cruelty charges.

I try to check mine every day, or at least every other day. Not 100% sure if it's true, but I've always heard hogs don't have sweat glands, and that is why they die so quick in a trap with no water. They have to stay cool.

I didn't figure they would last too long with no water. Well, thanks for your help, the trap will only be set when I'm there.

WHen the hog has put up curtains, and installed a large screen TV, It's been too long.
Forum says "Veteran Tracker". I could not track a garbage truck into a fireworks factory.

The fact that corn is put in the trap everyday and the pigs come everyday means you will catch pigs every time you set it. IF you really want to get rid of pigs it is worth the money to buy a feeder and let it run all the time. Where u live Billy???? Big Oak Bay Road???

You can always dig a little hole and take buckets of water when you have a bigger trap like this one..

I trapped a hog and shot it and just left the door open after I drug it out. I wasn't planning on coming back for a while so I just left the door open and didn't tie it open. I came back 10 days later to check my camera and there were 6 dead rotting hogs in my trap. After looking at the pictures the hogs trapped themselves by pushing the door closed the very next night. The two big ones lived 2 days and 4 little ones lived one day. It was the nastiest thing I have ever seen. The door was shut so the buzzards couldn't even get to them. It took damn near 2 months for them to rot. The crazy thing is the smell brought in more hogs than I have ever seen out there. They were feeding all around the trap and the smell didn't bother them one bit. I am finally able to use the trap again but it still smells like death out there. Moral of the story is if you set your trap, then check it the next morning. If your not going to set the trap, then tie the door open.
