I was grabbed a copy of the Waterfowl Digest yesterday and was just flipping through it when I came across a box with the title, "Mottled Duck Harvest Off Limits First Five Days". There are some population concerns on mottled ducks and the majority of the harvest occurs early in the season, so they decided to close the season on them for the first five days.

HERE is TP&WD's press release on the subject.

Just thought maybe some of you guys on the coast hadn't heard about this yet.

I noticed this when I was reviewing the new limits for this year. Even though I've never shot a mottled before, it's good to be aware of this new twist. I'm sure GWs will be checking on this one during the first week.

I saw that too.

No worries up here, but the coast hunters need to be aware.

Taylor, if you want a mottled duck, we can make that happen.

Strange thing about this is: . . a couple years ago (2004 season maybe?), the south zone had one week of regular season added to the end of early teal season. I think the stated reasons were: 1. TPWD wanted to get harvest info on mottled ducks. 2. Since the majority of mottled ducks had moved south by the November opener, this would give hunters an oppertunity to harvest them.

Now we've decided we're concerned about the population ?!?!

I dont remember seeing this in the Federal frame work definition (could easily have missed it.). Maybe Texas biologist know better than the Feds when it comes to managing migratory game. (?)
p.s. Don't get me started on whether the season should end on the 23rd or the 30th !!

I think the choice was to either take them off altogether or make the season for them shorter.

Supposedly, this will reduce the mottle duck harvest by 20%. There will be a lot of mottled ducks stomped in the mud I'm afraid.

Feds don't know anything about managing mottled ducks, there are non migratory.

Wow, I guess Mallard hens better be off limits for the first 5 days too, cuz I can't tell the difference in the air. Yep, lots of Mottled ducks stomped in the mud this year.
