I have been really excited about the new rage broadheads until now. I just shot it at two different targets two times each and it did NOT open. I am shooting the three blade. I first shot it at a foam block from Walmart. It didn't open. I cleaned it up and reset it. I tried again and it didn't open. I then moved to my "Block" target. I put a piece of paper in the front of it to be sure I saw the cut pattern. The broad head did not open on either of the two shots. One shot I checked the broadhead before messing with it. It was sticking out the back of the block. It had one blade fully extended, one half extended, and one still locked by the o-ring. I am thinking if it doesn't open in these solid targets, it will never open in a deer unless it hits bone. What do you think? I am shooting about 295 fps and about 420 grains. If you are using Rage, have you shot one of the real broadheads at a target, and if so, what happened?

I read somewhere that Rage did not use an o-ring. Could it have been there for safety only. I may be mistaken.

My mistake, they do have an o-ring - no rubber bands.

How are you sure that it didn't open? When you pull it out of the target, the blades should close back up, right.
I'm not going to turn this into a mechanical bashing thread, but instances like this are exactly what steered me away from mechanicals when I first started hunting. You don't have to worry about the blades not opening if they're always open!

They are supposed to open on impact. The entrance hole in the target and paper wan's any bigger than the closed broadhead. Also, the broadhead was hanging about 6 inches past the back of the target. One was still closed at this point.

Keep in mind that blades on any mechanicals are made to open easy. The easier they open, the less energy lost. The same theory applies to it closing. It has to close, just as easy as it opens.
If they're working properly, I'd think that you would have seen the cuts on the face of the target, simply because all mechanicals are designed to open before they enter the animal.
Personally, I wouldn't be able to shoot an animal knowing that my broadhead might fail. If I were in your shoes, I'd go buy some fixed blade broadheads (Muzzys are reliable and inexpensive), screw them suckers on, and not give it a second thought.
I exclusively use Razorcaps. It's a 3 blade, cut on contact, 1 1/8" cutting diameter head. I've killed everything from a squirell to a water buffalo with them. Unless you're having a problem tuning your bow, there's no reason to shoot mechanical broadheads.

I have now shot an 8 point whitetail buck, a hog, and a 8 point sika buck with the rage 3 blade. It worked extremely well all 3 times. Large holes and easy tracking.

I tried the 2 blade and had a different problem. I shot three of them and one kept opening in flight. It would miss the target by 4 feet.
I shot my deer this year with Muzzy 3 blade.

If they do not lock down good with the little black rubber oring at the base they will do that. After using them once I had to rotate the little ring around a little so that they would lock in the second time.

Tx_hoghunter, I did figure that out, but the one that kept opening I could never get to lock down.

I have read some of the problems ya'll have had with these broadheads. Some came before and some after I bought a three pack.Being the hard head and sucker for a new product I am I still had to give them a try.Needless to say they will be going into the trash !!!!Shot at a hog Saturday afternoon and as soon as the arrow left my bow it took off to the left and started climing .Missed the hog by a mile and heared my arrow banging thru a tree !WTF!!!!!I'm soooo pissed I can't see !!!!!Could not find my arrow but I think I had a blade deploy as it left my bow.Don't think I could have screwed a shot up the bad if I wanted to .Going to call Rage and tell them what I think about thier product but I think I will cool down some more first .I wanted my first bow kill so bad !!!!

I guess that I have been lucky or maybe my 260 fps bow is just not fast enough to cause them deploy early.

I am also hard headed and wanted the new product. I gave them 9 chances (3 packs) and 7 of the 9 failed the test. Be careful of these new broadheads. They have excellent marketing, but they have poor quality. I took back one pack and said they didn't work. I got a refund. I am planning on bringing back the other two packs soon. Just imagine if that was a buck of a lifetime. This is why no matter what you use, you must test it and retest it to ensure it will work when required.

I know this won't be the last time that I have to jump up on this soapbox, but here goes anyway!
KISS
Keep It Simple, Stupid
I'm a sucker for new toys too, but when it comes to the business end of my arrow, there's NO room for accidents. Through all the tests and reports, as well as simple physical science, the most reliable head is a fixed blade and the most efficient is a cut on contact with a 3:1 slope on the blades. There are a few heads that fill both bills, but I chose the Razorcaps. They're simple and effective.
If your bow won't shoot a certain fixed blade head ... IT'S NOT TUNED CORRECTLY!!!
Ok, I'm done preaching for today ... ya'll carry on!

A couple of weeks ago I got a 60 or so pound porker with a rage 2 blade. The broadhead put a perfect 2 inch cut in the hide and then smashed through the shoulder bone. He went maybe 80 yards. The blades are not even bent. So for so good, and the next arrow I let fly will have a rage on it.

When you shoot your mechanicals they are designed to open on impact. When they come to a sudden stop they may close as well. If you want to find out FOR SURE if they are opening or not, take some paper and tape it to the BACK of the target. When you shoot, if your going thru the target then you should see the lil benz emblem in the paper. Try it and see what happens.
