I grew up on a fairly accurate Savage .222. I know the company went through some bad times and built some very poor rifles for many years. Just for old times sakes I am looking at getting my father and I new ones. Does anyone shoot the modern Savage rifles like the 11 and 14 series? Just looking for opinions on the standard deer rifles.

Savage is putting out one of the best riles for the dollar now, and has been for almost a decade. My model 11 in 300 WSM is a tack driver, and wouldn't swap it for a gun priced twice as much.

I've got the model 11 in .243 with a laminated wood stock. It's a tack driver and will consistently do 1" groups at 100 yards. The accutrigger takes a little getting used to, but once you do, you won't want a regular trigger!

I love my Savage! up

I read an article about these and it said they were the most accurate rifle tested right out of the box. They were compared to the standard rifles (Rem, Win, Ruger).

I would definately buy one.

Savage has always made good rifle's the only problem and they still have it in my opinion, is they're ugly.

They sure are ugly, but everyone I talk to say they are shooting machines. Might have to check it out for myself.

Not the prettiest but both of my boys have one and they are very accurate right out of the box. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

They have come a long ways, more so in the last 10 years or so. They were pretty much the what Raven is to handguns, not very well liked and not that great in depenability. I have a Savage in 204 Ruger, with the accu trigger, and really like it. Good rifles, and probably the best as far as pricing from the rifle manafactures, imo.

Savage had a spell of a love affair with Wal-Mart, literally, and catered gun prices to them at the expense of quality back in the 90's. It's taken them a while to get their good name back after those poor QC years, but they are a fantastic company today, and they are very accurate out of the box. Best gun for the money today in every price range....

x2

But you are not trying to glamour a deer to death anyway.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I never thought the rifles were pretty. The gun is going to be a straight get out and hunt gun. I would be very pleased with an inch rifle. If I wanted a match quality gun I would spend 2k and build one.
Its good to hear that they really have brought quality back into the name. Looks like I'll be ordering a couple next week.

I am a huge Savage fan. Most accurate factory rifle on the market. Three of the top ten shooters in the world 1,000 yard competition shot stock Savage rifles and 4 of the top 15. These rifles cost less than $900 and were competing with custom made rifles that cost in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. Stan Pate is a good friend of mine and he finished third with his Savage. He shot the highest scoring round ever on the last day of the shoot.

I worked with Savage to produce their Model 10 and am giving input on their big game and new line of long range rifles. I have spent a lot of money on Remington Model 700s (another great rifle)to get to shoot like my Savages do out of the box. Ironically, Stan said that Remington does not even attempt to compete with Savage in the big competitions.

By the way, I love the Model 14 (short action) and the 114 (long action) in the American Classic. This will be my next rifle purchase. I want it in the .270 WSM but it is not currently offered in this caliber. I will have to go through the custom shop. I will use the rifle primarily for mule deer.
Adios,
Gary

That I do not doubt I've never owned one and the only one's I've ever shot were Lever Actions, but what from what Ive read they definitely deliver.

I bought my first Savage center-fire January of this year.. I now have 7! They all shoot better than any other gun I've picked up. I like the fact that you can swap barrels on them as well. I bought a used & abused 30-06 Savage from a member of this site, and turned it into a BEAUTIFUL 25-06.. Total cost involved was less than $400 (before scope) and I will keep it for EVER.

I agree that the stocks are absolutely FUGLY, and limp as a spaghetti noodle. But accuracy is where it counts, and Savage has it.

I have a 300 wsm, a .30-06, a .223, and a .243. I love them all. I took the .30-06 and the .300 wsm out to the range this evening after work and had great fun. I wish I were as good as my Savage rifles! I have other rifles by Winchester and Remington, but only one one that I like as much as the Savages is my Sako .270.

My .300wsm has the accutrigger and it is great. The only one I have changed from factory is the .30-06 and I had the trigger changed on it.

What type of three shot groups do you get with the WSM?
