The O ring would be the first thing I would replace! I have seen it make all the differnce in the world on a lot of 1100's and 1187's!

Agreed on the O-ring, ammo plays a big part too. Some shotguns are just finicky.

Make sure the mag tube exterior is clean, smooth and lightly lubed.

Ditto. El cheap aluminum shells from WalMart or decent brass? Completely break it down and clean it. Then try and cycle some brass. Betchya it'll do just fine.

+1, if the Oring is bad you can clean it all you want, it ain't going to cycle, just went through that with my 1100.

Check the chamber. It should be mirror bright. If it's rusty brown or a reddish color, it's become coated with plastic residue from previous shells. If so, the plastic case may be sticking in it. I would also make sure the shell ejector has sharp, clean edges and no chips out of the leading tip.

Pull the barrel off and see how easily a live shell drops into and out of the chamber. Ejection and feed are closely timed events and it the spent shell hangs for a microsecond, the whole process fails.

Then again, like others said, it may just need a new o-ring and cleaning of the gas ports in the barrel.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

My dad has one I was playing around with this weekend, before our clay shoot. I got to looking in the manual and it shows it should have one o-ring, the piston, then a another funny looking piston thing. The second one is to shoot 2 3/4 inch shells. His had it and it shot good. It says they recomend taking the second piston out if one is going to shoot 3" or 3 1/2". Check to make sure you have two and slap a new o-ring in it. . You can do a internet search and look up remington 11-97 manual. If your 11-87 has the second piston then take them out and clean evertyhing up including chamber. Try to stay away from the aluminium base shells. They jam up in his 1100's and 11-87, no matter if it's clean or not.

Those O-Rings really can last a long time. I had one last twenty years before it became brittle and broke. After all of these suggestions have you checked it yet to see if it is still rubbery or pliable?

I got my last O-Ring from my local gun shop. I don't think you are going to find that exact O-Ring at just a hardware store.

If you don't have a gun shop handy you might get it direct from Remington.

Don't shoot cheap shells out of it. My 1100 has jammed on the cheap stuff since the day I bought it. High Brass has never failed to cycle.

I had one that did the same thing.

I bought a Sure Cycle kit for it and my problems were solved.

A really good cleaning is good advice but the kit is the sure answer.

Is it a newer 11-87? If so, those things have a bad, bad reputation for jamming. Remington couldn't fix mine. I sent that thing to three different gun shops from Arkansas, Texas, and Kentucky. It was something different breaking or malfunctioning everytime.

Sold it and bought a Browning...problem solved.

mine was doing that and i replaced the plastic follower with an new one and it works great. my gun smith said they get worn and stick out too far and that causes the gun to gam up

I've shot an 11-87 for years now, I've had the same issue from time to time and a new o-ring is all that was wrong. I had my local gunsmith slick the gun up for me two years ago and he installed a Teflon o-ring instead of rubber. He said it would last a lot longer.

When I first got my 11-87 10-12 years ago it jammed. The problem was over lubrication. Worked flawlessly since, even with cheap dove loads to 3" duck loads.
