I had one. My son shot a doe, a bobcat, and a couple of hogs with it before I traded it for a scope. I used it to shoot a few hogs while in traps. We used the 55 gr. hollow points, and they did a number on everything we shot with them, and from the beginning, I was a pleasantly surprised at the accuracy it had with those cheap bullets. For deer, I don't think I would shoot anything that didn't have alot of expansion because those 55 gr. bullets would really be too small for deer otherwise. IMO. I bought that gun 6 years ago, and my son used it until he was about 11 or 12, and then decided he liked using my brothers 25-06 more.
But, I was so pleased with the little 223, that last year, when it was time to buy him an adult size rifle, I went an bought him an H&H 270 single shot in stainless. He's 15 now and didn't get the rifle until January, so he's not shot anything with it yet, but at the range, he's been just as accurate as he was with the little 223.

I have one with a $50. simmons 3x9x40. great little shooter. It will shoot under 1/2" groups at 50 yards with wolf 62gr FMJs. Ive got a few coons and a 10 point with it. my 16 year old son still deer hunts with it. he doesnt like heavy recoil and i think shot placement is more important than horse power.

Bought one for my son, and I like it more than he does. I put a cheap scope on it, and it is a great shooter. I also introduced my wife to rifle shooting with it. A good buy - you will never have any trouble getting rid of it if you so desire.

My son has one in a .243. He shot his first deer with it last year. he loves it. He started out with the .223 and then I moved him up to the .243 adn didn't tell him at first to keep him from worrying about the recoil. Not that there is much more but he weighed less than 50 pounds at the time LOL. I think the guns are great for kids. They are small, actually shorter than his Daisy BB gun, so the idea of shooting a "big" gun never enters their head.
I fought Him, ran from Him, thought I could do it all without Him, but when I finally turned to Him, He opened his arms and took me in.

I have one in .243, it is my most accurate gun. I have taken deer with Hornady V-Max 58 grain bullets. I don't recommend that, but I feel comfortable taking neck shots with it.

My son had one two seasons ago. I loaded apprx 20 different loads with 3 different bullets for it trying to get a more accurate load. The best I got out of it was about a 2.5" group at 100 yards. Some of the loads were over to 5" groups! I was not very happy with it at all and maybe I expected too much from the little rifle but when I have an old Marlin .22 mag that will group better than a .223 I don't think so. My son is very large for his age (turning 8 at the end of October and is 4'-9" tall) so last year I purchased him a regular sized .223 in a savage with the accu-trigger. The trigger pull is only 1" longer than the youth/ladies model guns so there is very little difference in the actual fit of the gun! His new .223 now shoots under 1" groups with hand loads. He started shooting my heavy barrel .243 & .308 rifles late last season and absolutely smoked two deer and a turkey with the .243 and now the .223 pretty much is used only on varmints in the off-season.
If you do not reload or have access to someone who does my best advice is to simply buy a box of each and every type of ammo you can find and see which one it likes the best! You might spend $150 at Academy but you can always let him shoot up the ones that don't shoot well at the range target practicing so you really are not wasting any money! It takes many, many rounds for a young child to learn to shoot correctly. My son has shot so much the last 3 years that I'd have no fear in him taking a 150+ shot at a deer with my .243 with a good rest. He shot a boar hog with my 22-250 a month ago out of the jeep at 225 yards and just smoked him!
You are doing the right thing by trying to find the most accurate load you can because it can make a huge difference if a child pulls off a little while shooting at a deer!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I bought one in .223 caliber for my grandson when he was 9 (he's 18 now). He used it for several years and killed a good number of deer with it. Last year, my 9 year-old granddaughter killed a great buck with it. It's extremely accurate, always has been.
