What do you think of this?

A Dallas company has genetically engineered and birthed 3 Dire Wolves that went extinct 13000 years ago and are working to bring back the woolly mammoth.

Dire wolf returns from extinction? Company reveals 'magic' it's using to bring back species

Quote
Colossal Biosciences, the genetic engineering company working to bring back the woolly mammoth, has actually already brought back one of its extinct Ice Age cohabitants: the dire wolf.

The Dallas, Texas-based biotech company revealed Monday the recent successful birth of three dire wolf puppies, a major step in proving the viability of Colossal's "de-extinction technologies" and its potential use in bringing back other species.

The birth of the dire wolf pups marks the first successfully de-extincted animal, Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm said in a press release.

“Our team took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies," Lamm said. "It was once said, ‘any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’ Today, our team gets to unveil some of the magic they are working on and its broader impact on conservation.”.................

The idea we should bring back a wolf that went extinct 10,000 years ago on it's own, is ridiculous. There's a reason it went extinct, leave nature alone.

Common sense seems to be extinct in some, work on that for the sake of humanity.

It's just publicity for funding, probably not even close being real. Same as bringing back the mammoth. It is possible that one day long from now it becomes reality.

Pretty sure we have a series of movies that prove bringing back extinct animals is not a good play......but I want one.

I was just about to start this topic.

Is this real, or some gray wolf-hybrid nonsense, not a real "dire"?

I suspect it's fake lab nonsense, but I'll keep reading this topic to see what I learn.

...?

I don’t like this at all. How about using this $ and knowledge to help cure a disease instead.

You can't make a Dire wolf from part of a skull and tooth! Just a modern wolf in Dire clothing.

I'm sure they can, or have found preserved ones in the permafrost.

Just my 2cents but not sure why we'd be doing this other than to prove out the science. I guess as long as they just keep a few in zoo's it's no harm, but a slippery slope. At some point an idiot group is going to push for reintroduction. That could be catastrophic.

It’s 99.99% grey wolf.

It only shares 12 out of 12000 unique dire wolf sequences

Wonder how much dna is shared between them and gray wolves? Could they interbreed? Google has estimated sizes that range, the biggest puts them at a bit larger than gray wolves but seems like there could have been overlap.
