When I cold start my Ram, it rev's to 1900rpm for about 3 minutes. Then it idles down to around 8-900rpm's.

Do you wait till the engine rev's down, or, do you start it, ram it into reverse and GO?

I let the Tundra idle down, but it doesn’t take 3 minutes. Maybe 30 seconds.

My F150 idles up for maybe 3-4 seconds before idling down on a cold start. Buzz, have you tried revving the gas pedal to get the idle to come down. I'm talking just one pump on the gas pedal and immediately letting off.

I go, unless it’s below 40 degrees then I let idle for a minute just make sure fuel is flowing.

I let every vehicle warm up to operating temperature before driving

I usually let it idle down.

Things that stand out to me are 1900 rpm and 3 minutes. Sounds very exaggerated to me or something ain’t right.

Mines like 20 seconds if it’s really cold and 12-1300 rpm.

If you have a diesel, disregard. Mine is a gasser, so I start it and go. It is a common consensus that hemi's with high idle hours have the most lifter or hemi tick problems. They are meant to be started and go unless maybe if it is real cold out and your not standing on it. I believe the high idle for the gas engines is first an emissions requirement, but also a comfort thing. My AC automatically turns on to max AC if below 40 degrees or above 78 degrees and turns on my cooled or heated seats and if below 40 degrees, the heated steering wheel, then only returns to the last setting when the temp gets in between those ranges. That is the extent of my knowledge on that and I have not timed my remote start hi idle time or even noticed it, but I suspect it might be running the high idle longer if it is kicking on the Max AC due to interior temp. So maybe that is what your are noticing. Again just a guess, I have not researched it, but I do know I have found little quirks like that before that are not in the manual.

I don’t worry about it because I have a pre 22 Tundra.

Paid attention when I went to lunch. 1300 for 10 seconds.

I rarely let 2003 / 5.9 Cummins warm up over 20-30 seconds. Modern vehicles aren`t intended to be warmed up due to oil dilution issues.

Ram 5.7, 1200 RPM for about 15 seconds. Yes, I wait to let the trans get flowing.

Buzz, crank it, hit the brake pedal and then put it in drive. Drive it easy until it gets up to operating temp.

I used to let everything sit and idle for a while, until I learned you're not doing any good. Granpa driving will warm everything up much faster than idling. Some transmissions do not cycle fluid sitting in park.

For some reason I thought he bought a red 2500. I looked back at Buzz's posts and looks like it is a Black 1500 Rebel. Might it be the V6 or Hurricane Buzz? That high idle might be normal then.

Trivia now, but mine with cold engine, hot cabin starts at around 1100 - 1200, drops to 1000 maybe 30 seconds later, then after a minute or two slowly drops to 700-750.

This is right John. I will time it and double check the RPM's tomorrow morning. Also see if it says anything in the manual roflmao

I was going to post this as well. I always thought letting it idle a few minutes was good for the engine but testing reveals otherwise. I get a lot of good testing info from The Motor Oil Geek.

My neighbors both let their trucks warm up every morning. It doesn`t matter if it`s cold or hot outside. One is a gasser, and the other is a diesel and both are 2016 models. I`ve often wondered how much $$$ they burn in a year to have a warm vehicle in the winter and a cool one in the summer when they get into it. Hell, I`ve driven my truck 10 miles to work in the winter before and the heater never got warm.

Idling isn’t good for diesels either, maybe even worse for them.

I remember having to reset the idle on my Tacoma a couple times.

There’s a sequence to it, should be on youtube or the owners manual.
