Before you get a trainer, go every day. Even if it's for 30 minutes go every day. Don't over complicate things. It's really easy to read a few articles on proper form to prevent injury. Warm up with resistance bands. If nothing else go to the bench press. Your back and neck are supported so it's simple and pretty hard to hurt yourself unless you drop it on your face. (That won't happen) Start with the bar with nothing on it, do 8-10 rep's and add weight until about 15 rep's is difficult. Fully recover and get 8-10 rep's, recover, repeat, recover, repeat. Do similar progressions on different muscle groups, different exercises like dumbbell curls. The next day, for your legs, get on a stair machine or elliptical.
Once you become addicted to the endorphins you will HAVE to go. There are worse things to be addicted to. I never used a personal trainer; I had other resources. A trainer is not bad idea to ger you started. If you want a work out partner for a few days let me know.

Old and weak Try to get in a rehab program that specializes in your age bracket. Most gym trainers are certified in safety, not necessarily rehab. Once you have the routine down, you do it on your own and check in with trainer for tweaks in the program. Training is an evolution in adaptation. Goal is to get out of one program into the next more intensive level
