Anyone have their propane tank buried? We're remodeling and adding gas to the kitchen so have to put in a tank. Just weighing options.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Had a 500 gallon put in when we had the pool built. Not much to it. Pool company dug the hole per the specs and I dropped it in and buried it. If memory serves, I think I payed $1800 for the tank. Purchased through the propane company I have that services and fills it.

Back in the 40s and 50s Butane was popular. Butane tanks were buried inorder to keep them warm in freezing temps. I do not remember any buried LP tank options, but your LP supplier would be your best option for advice.
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

My propane tank is buried, I had the propane guy here put it in when we built the house. They will have to check it every three years for corrosion, there is a wire they put in and they just hook a meter up and check it. I wouldn't have an above ground by the house, this keeps them out of sight.

I had my propane tank buried. I think they look ugly and wanted one less thing to mow/weed eat around.
My propane company would allow me to lease the tank if I wanted it above ground but made me purchase it upfront if I wanted a buried one.

We have a gas cooktop and gas fireplace. This tank will last us 2 plus years, and we cook at home quite a bit and use the fireplace often. Buring it would be a pain in the a$$ when you can place it beside your house per code. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-8162-448417-5_31_23.jpg)

![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-6760-448424-img_2775.jpeg) I buried this one for a neighbor. Think it was 4 ft deep 3 ft wide and 6 ft long. 500 gallon.

Well there is your answer. Now, I have a couple of questions. Is the tank piped to house with yellow pipe? Did you need a concrete pad or footers to stabilze tank?

It yellow plastic to a steel riser and valve where it goes into the house and then steel pipe into the house.

If I may ask - How many gallons is it and what were your “code” requirements?

We had ours buried 3 - 4 years back. The buried two large anode bags right below the tank and told me I was good for a minimum of 10 years, at that point, they would need to test to make sure the anode bed had any life left.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Thanks. I gave up my LP certification a handful of years back. Always Interesting to see the new or improved methods technology allows.

We opted to keep ours above ground, this way it’s “leased” which means nothing in reality, other than the gas company that installed it prefers you use them for gas. The big thing is they cover the cost of all inspections, repairs, etc. My neighbor just had to have his in ground tank replaced, it’s 10 years old, he said it was $5500 for a 250 gallon tank to have the old removed and new installed.

If I may ask - How many gallons is it and what were your “code” requirements? I believe it is a 120-gallon tank that is filled to 80%, so it holds 96 gallons when full. I actually don`t know what the code states, but our builder builds many custom and spec homes in rural areas and inside city limits where it has to pass city inspections, and this size tank is always beside the house like mine is.

We have one buried in our backyard as well. It was already there when we bought the house 26 years ago. No problems with it, though.
