Our vacation is pretty much the same every year. We visit my in laws in Cape Cod. We always fly but after working the numbers it would actually be much cheaper to drive. Between plane tix and a rental car we can save a significant chunk driving. I hate driving and being in a car in general. But we are going to make the best of it. We are stopping at Gettysburg and Cooperstown on the way. Who has been to either one? What do I need to know?

What is the duration of your vacation? Driving to CC is ~ 30+ hours. I would hate to waste vacation days driving to and from.

My hips are hurting thinking about sitting in a vehicle that long.

I love driving cross-country. Enjoy!

Been to Gettysburg many times. It's huge, so unless you're a Civil War buff, it's pretty difficult to gain a grasp of all that was going on over those few days and how all the pieces fit together. I would do a bit of research prior to going and I know there are many youtube vids that can tell the story succinctly too. I'm sure there are auto tours you can download that will guide you on a drive throughout the battlefield.

One option is to hire a guide as well. While I cannot vouch for any guide there, we hired a guide to take us around Normandy and it was well worth the money. https://gettysburgtourguides.org/guided-tour-rates/

Rent a car at DFW or DAL and save the wear and tear on your car.

Enjoy the US. I used to love driving across the US.

Now being away from the office is too costly, so we fly.

I love road trips, but don’t like driving more than 7 hours a day. But hate flying, airports, connecting flights, lost luggage, transfers, rental car lines…. I hate having to be on time, drive you don’t have to worry about that, and I like have my truck and carrying all my gear.

Same, not a fan of driving but despise flying. We just got back from spring break in Gatlinburg TN and it’s about 13 hours. The drive there is never that bad we leave at around 2am so my son and wife sleep until 7-8am which takes a good bit of them being bored away because they’re sleeping. But the drive home always sucks, we leave at 10-12 and then get home at 1-2 am.

Our summer vacation we’ll be going to Bahamas to the Atlantis.

We went in 23. We stayed at Sandals, but got a day pass to Atlantis. It was just the wife and I, but we had a blast. Honestly, wish we would have stayed there. If you’ve got any questions about Nassau, shoot me a PM and I may be able to answer.

Appreciate that, it’ll be myself, wife, and 7 year old. We’ll also be traveling with my wife’s best friend and her family which has an 8 year old. We’ve done several trips together and have always had a blast.

We stayed at the Atlantis last June, the kids and us adults both had fun. My cousin and I walked to the liquor almost daily to stock up on what we needed for the day. Also we rented a cabana by the pool a few times, made it nice since there was 8 of us. We didn't have to worry about trying to get down to the pool early to get 8 chairs together. The lazy river isn't very lazy at all!

We leave on June 20th and will drive back July 19th. I am taking a week off from work to make it work in our time period. My wife is a teacher and I am a principal so we get a little more time. I may add Colonial Williamsburg to the list as well on the way. Thats why we are driving, renting a car for that amount of time just while we are there is very costly on top of plane tix. My in laws only have 1 vehicle so we have to rent while we are they anyways. Taking our own car we can take a cooler and eat our own food vs eating out the drive there. We will also be taking golf clubs and playing golf.

For that duration of time, yes I'd drive.

Also check your local rental car office as the airport rentals can have a lot of extra taxes and fees.
