Had a couple of nice Toms appear the last few days in Lavaca County. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-65124-448190-20250323_144548.jpg)

I've honestly never hunted turkey in my life. How can one definitely tell the difference between a Tom and a Jake. Can Jakes even be shot or is it like shooting a yearling deer or even against the law?

Nice young tom in the photo and once his beard grows out, a good trophy! Jakes are legal by the way.

No it doesn't, the last 3 feathers of the fan are juvenile feathers. They aren't always way shorter, sometimes just slightly.

Its all about the evenness of the fan and the length of the beard, my personal rule of thumb is a 6" fan minimum, while jakes are legal i dont wanna kill one.

I didn't catch this until it was too late to edit, I meant to say 6" beard
