I have only bought a couple of firearms online and they were from FFL dealers. My question is what has to be done if you purchase a firearm from example Gunbroker from an individual out of state that does not have a FFL. Do they just ship it to your FFL or are there other things that have to happen before it can be shipped?

The key is to have a ffl that will accept shipping from a private party. Otherwise you’ll run into ffl to ffl fees.

Ok - thanks - is it just a personal preference thing to protect themselves or are there other reasons that some won’t or some do? I have never needed it before but looking for something very specific and so far all I have found are from this individuals and was just curious how it worked.

The FFL has to record who the gun came from, and some individuals are bad about sending a gun with no seller info (full name & address).
So now the FFL has a gun they can't completely log in, which means they also can't log it out to you, and sometimes dealers who've had to deal with that more than once, don't want to have to deal with it again. Can't blame them.
If the seller will include a copy of their state issued ID in the box with the gun, it makes the transaction go much smoother.

Got an email that Gunbroker has signed a deal with UPS to ship guns directly from you to the buyers FFL without having to involve an FFL on your side. In your situation you'd still need an FFL to receive the gun where you live.

Been looking at gunbroker too. Can individuals/me sell the on there as a non ffl, as long as I ship to an ffl, if some states require to and from an ffl no big deal. Some rifles fetch a pretty penny on there.

And a word of advice state a flat rate for shipping that will cover actual shipping costs. Anything heavy in a pelican case will be $100+ so don’t loose money! Or at least minimize the loss.

FYI...GunBroker fees are outrageous and they collect sales tax.

I think if you're buying from someone without an FFL, they should just ship the gun to your local FFL dealer. Then your dealer will handle the paperwork and background check before you can take it home.
