Got the bad news from our land owner. He's lived in that country all his life, this was the worst straight windstorm he's ever seen. Snapped a couple of utility poles, destroyed a couple of windmills, most of our elevated stands didn't make it. I was about ready for a rebuild anyway, feel bad for the other guys. I'm hoping my stand and fill feeders made it, they were well anchored. It will be a while I can get down there. Looks like I'll be plenty busy during turkey season.

Any reports from others? I'll be curious to see how cabin and the other hunters campers weathered it. Glad I went to a Conex.

Not sure. My FIL should be out to check my place soon. I've got one tall stand that has survived a knock-over before that I'm concerned about. eek

I hunt in Childress out of a pop up blind that I take down after the season. I have a stand and fill 600lb feeder that
had 500lbs in it and the feeder made it with no problem, however, it was funny looking at my camera and there
is a straight line of corn for 25 feet out one side of my feeder where the wind was strong enough to spend the feeder
and blow it out one side. All the other guys have really old and crappy wooden stands and none of them made it. But
I didn't understand how they were standing up in the first place.
Wind was a constant 50mph with gust to 65.

We headed up to Shamrock for St Pat's.

Saw 4 overturned semi-trucks and road signs that were bent in half like a creased sheet of paper around their poles.

Here was the recorded wind speeds at Amarillo Airport that Friday. (March 14th)

Good info. What is the source of this chart? I'd like to see it for subsequent days. I believe we had another round.

Funny, my feeder completely spun out all of the corn too. I don't think I have seen that before. Luckily, my rifle blinds made it. T posts on legs plus steel cable from the bottom of the blind with a turnbuckle to a 3' earth anchor covered in quikrete did the trick. Haven't checked on anything further south, but its all the same set up, so I am hoping for the same results.

This is the one I'm worried about, it's survived 70 MPH in the past years. It's about 60' up from the river bottom in the open wind. [Linked Image]

I hope those t-posts are sunk deep and that bailing wire held.

You woldn't believe how strong and secure that method is. It's been out for 7 years, we've had wind to 70 and it's hung in there fine. There are several wraps of doubled up wire twisted tight. If anything it may have ripped the box off and the platform and legs will still be there.

OSW, if you happen to get there and find the stand laid over with the t-posts still attached, be VERY careful cutting them loose. I saw a doubled over t-post basically shoot back upright and whack a guy across the face. Sent him on a trip to the ER in Brady. You would think that once bent, they would stay bent, but they don't always do that.

Thanks. That would really mess up a day, and your face. I'm really thinking I'll have a platform with no blind. The deer view windows will hurt the most. The rest of it was getting close to a make over. It's the perfect shooting nest. 54" sq, can shoot 360° with a solid front and rear rest. I've killed so much stuff from up there.

we were RV camping in Palo Duro Canyon SP last Wed thru Sat. The park rangers, game warden and park host all came by our camper on Thursday to let us know about the winds and that the electric company was shutting power off 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Friday all around that area due to wildfire dangers. We ventured into Canyon during the day and visited the museum (I would highly recommend it) and lunch (Texas Rose was solid!) since we didn't have power. The winds were pretty crazy in Canyon, will cost us a new windshield on the Tahoe from blowing rocks.

It blew the roof off one of our camp houses North Childress County,
But somehow all our stands are still up

It made it! Blew the glass out of 2 windows but stand handled the 85 mph wind well. I built this 7 years ago. Knocked down blinds on towers all over the lease, some abut 8 miles apart so we had it bad all over. I'll never anchor a blind any other way.
