This is a 175 grain Hornady SUB-X loaded over 30 grains of W748, with a Fiocchi large rifle primer. I made these on my humble little Lee Loader. Don’t ask me how long it takes me to make 5 or 6 rounds, ok?[Linked Image][Linked Image]

Good job! Regardless of how long it takes, at least you're reloading!

I have owned many of those sets but have never actually tried to use any of them.

Pass the gravy.

Congrats on your first reloads! It is a worthwhile hobby. I remember the sense of satisfaction I got from my first batch of reloads. I also remember a bit of anxiety right before pulling the trigger on my first reloads. I thought I was going to save all kinds of money… Man was I wrong. I did cut the $/round cost. I shot up anything I saved, and then some though.

Thanks up If nothing else, it is good to know I can lay in a supply of components and it will get me through the next shortage. I will probably upgrade though. I had to find the right COAL by trial and error, adjusting the die a few turns each try. I can’t imagine trying to find the right COAL over and over with different bullets, I have three different bullets on hand to try.

I have high hopes for this SUB-X bullet. It’s basically a 175 grain flat-based FTX with a small flat tip. It is supposed to expand at 900 fps. So theoretically, I should still see good bullet performance at range from anywhere close to standard velocity. I am guessing this will be a 1600-1700 fps load, and something my kid can hunt with this year.

This has been a long, long time in the making. For a few years, this Marlin 336Y was the only rifle I owned. I selected it based on being a rifle that literally my whole family can effectively use to make meat. I think this should be manageable for my daughters to use. If not, I might try W760.

H-4895 is the powder of choice for reduced recoil loads.

Well I might try that one instead. Maybe in a .308, I have an American Compact that might be a good candidate for.

I remember taking my first 5 reloads of 270 to church in my pocket and showing them to my great uncle (my reloading inspiration) I was 11… ah I miss the good old days.

I love H-4895 but it’s been MIA for quite some time now….if I were to find a supply of it I’d buy what I could afford.

The first group from 50 yards, standing, using the railing off my back deck for stability. This with a 30/30 Remington- Marlin lever gun and heavy factory trigger, that really only likes one factory load. I am hooked. Don’t sleep on that Lee Loader up I will try to get out more this weekend.

Red dot, 2400, several others for light 30/30 loads. My JM Marlin seems to like the 160 FTX best.

I need to try those, too. I have some on hand. 150 grain Interlocks, too. But for now, I think I am going to make a load ladder for this SUB-X, and work my way up to 33 or 34 grains of W748. Can’t really find any good 175 grain load data so I have to run on 170 grain data and work my way up.

The rest of this ammo I have loaded, i will probably test out on coyotes. If it will open up on a coyote, then this bullet will for sure expand in a deer 👌

I started reloading at 14 years old with a Lee Loader for my 30-30. Killed several deer with the old Speer Hot Core 150gr Round nose over a charge of the dipper it came with full of 3031. (one of the loads listed in the data the set came with)

In the day, I think these loaders had a 2.2cc dipper. This modern version comes with a 1.9 cc dipper. Some things I have read online indicate there may have been pressure issues with 2.2 cc RAM TAC, probably not level. With the 1.9 CC dipper, I am getting about 28 grains of W748. I’d probably have to use RAM TAC to get close to standard velocity. So I weigh my charges on a digital grain scale instead. I am using the Hornady reloading app, they have not published data for this bullet 🤷‍♂️

When I read that far I expect you to say "...so the priest could bless them before I fired them." That's based on how I felt the first time I fired anything I reloaded without my coach looking over my shoulder back in '81, I think it was. I wasn't really all that confident!

To me the most satisfaction came from dropping a pig with my reload.
Nice work 10 guage!

I use IMR3031 under a now hard to find Sierra game king soft point. I also use a Ranch Dog mold to cast 177's that get a gas check and powder coating. I shoot those with IMR3031 also but my reduced load is 10 grains of Unique.

Pass the gravy.

It is kind if crazy. This proves that you could literally pound out reloads with a hammer that can hang with your rifle’s favorite factory load. I did not even clean my brass.

Might download a copy of GRT reloading SW. Free and pretty decent. Has most of common powders.

I used to load 45/70 with the lee classic loader. After some time, I did upgrade as you have stated that you might. Glad I did, too. You can make much more consistent ammo with a press.
