and there are two young boys from the neighborhood wanting to earn some money doing chores. The ring leader with his dad and younger sister came by last year and sold me some cookies for a school fund raiser, seemed like a real good kiddo.

Ironic that earlier in the morning I told the wife I was going to use the mower to suck up/bag all of the leaves from the Live Oak out front, then a gust of wind hit and a bunch of more leaves fell from the tree so I decided to wait a couple of days knowing that it is going to be real windy and there are a lot of more leaves up there that will drop, wife said good idea on waiting!

Okay back to the two young boys at the door.
Not really anything for them to do around here except rake the leaves that I mentioned previously, so I said how much to rake the leaves in the front yard only, the ring leader replied $10.00.
Me okay I will get a couple of rakes and some water for you guys, as soon as I walked in I had already decided to give them $20.00 instead.
Bring the water, rake and yard bags out and the ring leader said uh we meant $10.00 each is that okay, I grinned and said yeah but you better do a good job if you want more work out of me in the future, them okay thanks.

Well I decided to pay them in advance so I could take a nap, just went outside and those rascals got me, they only did the easy side of the yard half azz and boogied

Dark haired one is the ring leader, I have put a APB and a BOLO for them

You should know better, never hire anyone to do a job if they show up wearing two different color shoes and still wearing pajama bottoms.

Never pay in advance…even the honest looking ones will get ya.

Half [censored] to us isn't necessarily half [censored] to a kid - they probably just needed some direction. I would address it next time I saw them, hire them again but supervise next time. Would be a good learning experience for them hopefully.

I had a neighbor kid mowing my grass for spring and 1/2 the summer.
We went on vacation so I paid him one week in advance for when we were gone. He didn’t mow while we were gone and never came back again. I guess beating me out of 1 mowing put him ahead and and he was quitting while he was ahead. 😂

The way I look at it is another very inexpensive lessoned learned on my part about paying people you really do not know up front.

It will be interesting when our paths cross again, going to mess with them in a fun way

I've hired them in the past, would again.
Of course they know nothing - it ain't about that.


If they knock on the door and are selling something for "the team at school" or whatever, it's a guaranteed sell.


I'll support any young person that will work. Folks supported me back then.

People definitely work harder when they haven't got the paycheck yet. Look at athletes before and after signing a big new contract. Growing up in SWVA yard work for neighbors was my year round job, mowing and gardening in spring and summer, raking leaves in fall, shoveling snow in winter.
