What is the farthest you have tracked a deer?
I had some friends out to the Transpecos ranch years ago and they brought their grand-kids.
One of the boys got a bad hit on a doe and it took off. We tracked that thing for a mile and a half!
If there had not been snow on the ground it wouldn't have been recovered.

On foot about 3/4 of a mile. That’s where the deer found the road and we lost all signs of blood. We ended up going to the gas station down the road and found the deer. Guy had it on his flatbed. He left before the GW showed up. If you count the drive, about 5 miles.

had two that went around the 1 mile mark that we tracked with dogs. One we found and one we didn't
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

About 2 miles. This was when I was growing up in CO and I had a forkhorn mulie facing me at about 60 yards and I tried to shoot him at the base of the neck. Bullet hit a branch I didn't see and hit the buck along the ribcage, breaking 3 or 4 ribs but never entered the chest. Not much blood, just a drop here and there but as the buck went through tall sagebrush it left swipes of blood about belt buckle high. Took a long time to trail him and when I got another shot I put the bullet in his head.

Rifle or muzzle loader, about 30 yards. Bow, about 300 yards.

Very low and little far back shot on a doe with a 223. She made it a long way I don’t know how far and I am amazed we found her. It took from the morning hunt till noon or after following the trail slow.

Not a deer but a blackbuck. I hit him at 375 yards as he was trotting slowly. I thought at first it was a good shot, ended up being a bit low in the front left shoulder. We tracked him for over six hours in the deep canyons of the hill country. Finally the blood trail gave out and there was no sign of him. We split up trying to circle and find some sort of sign. We were completely exhausted and worn out and the person we were hunting with called it. First time ever I had lost an animal I hit.
Distance is not the issue, but the winds can make it interesting!

This would be more interesting if everybody clarified if their long stalks were successful and if they required a finishing shot.

A bow kill near Maryneal TX for a little over a mile, but it was not tracked most of that way. I initially waited and then tracked the deer to a neighbors fence. On the other side was a section of wheat field. I spotted the deer way far away moving along slowly and visibly having a hard time. I did have a mutual agreement that that landowner where either of us could cross the fence in such a situation, but the deer never went down. I got in my truck and moved to a road where I could follow along with binoculars. It eventually traveled across the entire section to a farm road on the opposite side. The spot where it got to the road there had a cemetery on the other side right were it jumped the fence. It walked right on through the open gate of the cemetery and the cemetery was surrounded by a tall old rusty goat fence. The deer was slowing so I thought I had it made. I already was thinking how awkward it would be when someone drove by with me dragging a deer out of a cemetery, much less shooting one with a bow there, so I left my bow in the truck. Though it tried, the deer could not jump that one, so as I entered the Buck started fighting the fence with it's antlers and made a hole big enough to get through. Fortunately for me it fell just on the other side, so I was able to climb through and finish it with a knife I then shoved it back through the hole it made. I was hurried wanting to get out of there before someone drove by. It was a very surreal moment dragging that dead deer across the cemetery past all those headstones, throat cut and still bleeding.

Once I need to go across property lines I would get the game warden in the loop to give me instructions to track across properties or not. I have never had to do that for me but did for an other hunter. We called the hunters across the fence and they helped us. I have had other hunters come to me and ask to trail a deer on our lease and we all helped them with success. So..without some permission I would not cross property lines. It just too dangerous! Even on my own lease I would go to the hunter that is hunting the area and get help or go to camp and get other hunters to help. I would not track a deer across lines without notification of some sort.

200 yards is the farthest I've tracked.
A different doe, we tracked 100 yards through Runnels County brush and mesquite. We lost blood. Randy said screw it, and went to get the 4 wheeler. I started shining lights under nearby cedars and found the doe under one of them. Randy had perfect shot placement. The bullet went in .308 and came out .308.

Tracked a wounded Elk a friend shot , followed the blood about 800 yds. It was so weak when I found it, that it couldn't get up.

Sniper, what length of time passed total? I don't remember because it was so many years ago. I do remember it seemed like forever, like one of those nightmares where some event goes on and on and on. Just the waiting hoping it would go down while crossing the private section of wheat field had to be over an hour. The cemetery did not take up much time. It got through that fence faster than you would think. I wanted to get it out of there asap before anyone drove up seeing the scene and me having to give what would have been an unbelievable story. I was probably freaking out a bit. I had a deer hunting related nightmare that night that I have never forgot and that alone is a great story for anyone who might share a campfire with me.

For me, it was probably 6-700 yards in a Fort Benning training area back in 2000. I shot a buck late one morning with a 12 ga slug out of my 870 w/ rifled barrel and it took out the backside shoulder. He came running by me with that backside front leg just flapping in the wind. Me and a couple buddies trailed him across a creek and up a decent hill, even finding a 3/4" piece of rib in the blood trail. The blood ran out once we crested the hill and we scoured that hilltop for about 2 hours. We were in disbelief he made it that far with that kind of damage. Since it is essentially public land, I began to think the buck expired in view of another hunter, who got down and took him. My suspicions were confirmed the next day when I met a guy in the same area who told me he got a nice buck the day before and had the rack in his vehicle. When I saw that rack, I knew immediately it was my buck. Not provable and nothing I could do about it.

I witnessed that happen once. I was hunting the bois d arc unit of the caddo grasslands on an opening day. I was walking out from the morning hunt and came up on a hunter with camp 9 of all things. He had shot a buck and lost the blood trail. I offered to help him. Note while looking he mentioned he had missed a deer the day before. I let him know the season was not open yet the day before. Caddo back then opened a few days later than the state opening day to ease hunting pressure. Then where the blood trail ended, I told him to stay there at the point where the blood trail stopped so we would not lose it and I would walk a little ways in the direction the deer was traveling and yell back or return to him if I found the blood trail again or the deer. I came up on another hunter and apologized explaining what I was doing. I asked if he had seen a wounded deer and he said no, but a strange thing he picked up a rope off the ground and mentioned that this would be good for dragging a deer and he should save it. I suspected it was him that dropped it. I walked back to the guy I was helping and he was not there. He had left me while I looking for his deer. When I got to the camping area, he was there on the other side of the camp. I told my hunting partners the story and was about to go confront the guy when the second hunter showed up dragging a deer with that rope. He quickly put the deer in his truck with his buddies patting him on the back and closed the topper before I could see it. I walked over and said so you found the guy's deer. He said no, he shot it just after I left him. Only problem is there had been no gunshots during that time. I decided to just leave it be considering the first hunter left me looking without telling me, had been poaching with a camp 9 the day before, and should not have been hunting with a 9mm to begin with, and so I did not tell him. But the 2nd hunter 100% stole that guys buck.

Lowlifes do lowlife things for a stupid deer. I don't understand getting even the slightest sense of satisfaction from taking another hunter's deer.
