Friends,
I'm trying to decide on a caliber for a new build...mostly for western mule deer hunts. Can I get 3000 fps at the muzzle from a 7mag with a 175gr bullet?

would appreciate your insights....

thanks

Lou

22" - No
24" - Usually with max loads
26" - Yes

No problem at all.

My 7 Rem Mag is a 180 gr Berger 3050 fps, 26" barrel.

But, if you're building a rifle anyway, and you want the King of bore calibers, 7mm. I am inclined to point you to 28 Nosler. Load that with a 195 gr and watch it smash things.

Not to add any confusion but I shot an aoudad last week at 475 with 175eldx. 22” 7prc MV 2850 and impact velocity roughly 2330+-

Ended up severe qtr’ing away, bullet entered left hip, rested in skin of off side arm pit pocket. Bullet traveled 40” +- . Went roughly 30yards before crashing

I’ve taken 4 animals with it this year from 400-600 yards.

It’s a 6.5lb bare rifle, suppressed and optics its 8.75lb.

I had a 28 Nosler that I thumped a lot of aoudad and few elk with it well over 600, but spotting hits was a lot tougher than 7prc. On game performance I see no measurable difference between 7prc 175eldx and 28 195 eol. Recoil management though is a lot easier with 7prc. I think to really see an on game difference it’s going to take 900 plus yards, and honestly wind call is not that different

New 7mm Backcountry runs 3050 from 22 inch barrel with factory 175’s and I got 3030fps with reloads and 180gr Bergers.

How hard was reloading?
