After I finished the novel “Lonesome Dove” ( which I thought was pure excellence ) I was excited to pick up the sequel.
Eagerly tore into it and I’ll say I’m pretty disappointed. Book kinda sucks. I know the original would be a hard act to follow, but this is rough. I’m gonna finish it, however I hope it improves. I think Louis La’mour novels were bad but this one is right up there.
Has anyone finished this book and enjoyed it?
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I read it but like you I was disappointed. Larry went off on some weird tangents.
I still think the best western writer is Elmer Keith.

Don’t forget Elmer Kelton. He is regarded as the best.
Lonesome Dove was truly a hard act to follow. As far as I can tell, he never reached that level again.

Has anyone finished this book and enjoyed it? If you don't Louis La'Mour you must like a lot of conversation and not description. I've read every Louis La'Mour I can find at least 5 times. I will say the books his son Beau finished after his death aren't the same caliber. Maybe you got a hold of some of those.

Another good western author is Ralph Compton. But you need to make sure you're reading a novel he wrote prior to his death in 1998. His after death novels are easy to spot, because while Ralph Compton's name is in big print, it also says "A Ralph Compton novel by John XXX". So they disclose it's his story, but not his writing.

LOL, The movie was worse. James garner blows Was a terrible movie. Had higher hopes for the book but it’s not looking promising

^^^^^^^^ I agree. I owed every book he wrote and wore the covers off them. Just gave the whole set to my daughter to pass down and she has her head in one every day.
