It’s a lifestyle, not a hobby. It is her fault she didn’t figure that out.

I’ve drilled dozens of dry holes, but they all were fun in their own way. Early on in my career, i had the chance to buy 5,000 net mineral acres in upton county for $1,500 an acre. I had no money, but I was good at raising it. All my partners said it was too expensive and we passed. That interest pays around $4,000,000 a month now. My standard 10% carry would be pretty sweet had we taken it. I don’t think about it more than 10x a day.

How could it be, it was the woman’s fault?

In all seriousness, any hobby that takes away time from the family/spouse is gonna factor into any marital issues to some degree.

My first go around I was gone all the time hunting, fishing, partying, hanging with my buds. It’s no big shocker that we got divorced. Actually surprised that it took as long as it did, though it should have been a non-start from the get-go.

As far as worst financial decision? Restoring a classic auto. Totally was a waste of time and money.

If you wanna get down to it, anything that doesn’t make you money is a bad financial decision ( Que Dave Ramsey) but there is value in most things, like trips, memories, etc.

Only thing I got from the resto was bad memories, lost time and a less money in the bank account, not to mention stress and fights with my wife.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My ex complained about me hunting too much. I whittled it down to one day a year to hunt. She still complained. The problem wasn't hunting.

One day a year?

That’s treason.

Mine stated hunting to spend more time with me. Now she is trying to invite her self on my retirement 30 day northern adventure. It’s a horse back hunt…. Her and horses are oxymorons. My mom still makes fun of her after watching her ride.

I forgot about that one. I doubt it would have lasted very long.

Had a chance to buy 300 acres of good pasture land when I was 19 for $65,000 total. My dad had already made the deal for me and had me approved for the loan.

I thought he was out of his mind, and couldn't imagine how I would ever be able to survive saddled with a land payment and I passed on the deal.

I started kicking myself less than 5 years later and I regret it every time I drive past the place which is twice a day. It's worth over a million now.

That was the last year we were married. I had one hell of a hunting season the following year.

Left a good job after 10 years and joined a company in another state for the money. Huge mistake...that company was on its last legs and I did not ask the right questions during interview process. I lasted 90 days and bailed, only to bounce around for a few years before finding a new career home. It worked out okay in the end, but it was a bad experience at the time.

Also, got talked into buying a used Porsche in the early 1990's. The car was only a couple of years old and low miles, and a huge blast to drive, but I think I am still paying repair charges.

Years ago, my brother wrote a 5k check to buy bitcoin before anyone knew about bitcoin. Called 3 days later to cancel what would be worth around 1.6 billion today.

I’ve burned a few trading accounts and sold real estate too soon, but I always think of my brother when my investments don’t go my way.

Odds are he would have sold it a long time ago.

My cpa tried to get me to buy when it was $4k/coin.

A bunch of his clients did but sold when it hit $17k/coin.

Made good money but not millions and certainly not billions.

That’s a good point of a lot of not purchasing past opportunities, that are now worth a fortune.

Not me but, close to me - put my 82 Jeep Scrambler (at least 3rd owner) up for sale in 2002. Athough it looked good and did run sound (most everything had been redone or rebuilt), the odometer had 258,000 miles on it. The 1st guy to look at it gave me a check for $12,500. I saw it two weeks later and it already had a new bumper, lift, wheels, winch and tires on it. Did not see it again for ten years when all of a sufdden, I got phone calls saying my Scrambler was back in town.

Saw it at the bakery and stopped to creep on it. A couple (not the purchasor) came out and wondered WTH was I doing. Told them I used to own it and would think about buying it back if they ever were to sell it. They called me six weeks later and offered it to me for $8,000. Asking them what was wrong with it, they replied nothing. I immediately went over there, checked out the ofometer showing less than 5,000 miles had been put on it since I sold it and asked if I could take it to my mechanic. From the minute it started up, I know something was "different". Getting out at the shop, I immediatell looked under the hood and noted the repainted engine & automatic trannsmission (each rebulit), stainless steel gas tank, fuel injection and more. Went back and wrote out a $8,000 check.

Called the guy I sold it to and asked him what all he had done to the Scramber he purchased from me. He told me he spent more than the purchase price fixing it up as it was going to be his forever vehicle. Three years later he and his wife got crosswise resulting in a divorce. She demanded that Scrambler and then sold it to the neighbor for $5,000 who later sold it to the guy I bought it from for $6,500 and then, of course, I paid $8,000. I still feel bad for Tommy and his $25K.

I talked myself out of investing deep into debt to buy the empty lots near me at the beach in CA. Our little 1964 cottage went from $250k to $ 870k in the nine years we were there. The tiny lots were selling at $50k to $65k in 1999. By 2002 they were climbing fast, but I figured they had topped out. I was way wrong - they were selling for $500k to $700k each when I moved to Texas in 2008.

We did great on our home, but those empty lots could have been...
