So no one might think that I wish to be taken for a saint, let the record reflect that I've outlawed exactly one deer (an old doe) and I've regretted it every time I've thought about it in the forty-some-odd years since I did it. I knew it was wrong then but I did it anyway. It's a stain on my hunting career and something that I deeply regret. Not that one exists, but I'll de damned if I'd have my moral failures work to make a buck for me after the fact. Mr. Beaty strikes me as the archetypal "unrepentant sinner". No doubt, we're all sinners...but to pursue continued gain and fame for his breaking of the 8th Commandment? Yeah, "unrepentant" fits.

They say that your character is defined by how you behave when nobody's watching. Mr. Beaty reveals his own character for a fact.

All that said, I wish him the very best in his struggles with cancer. I'm not sure that even poaching warrants a punishment like that.

I read his book and I felt dirty afterward. He is not sorry and not remorseful, he is only trying to make a few dollars

me too, guys slimy as are all the poachers.

I do agree that high fences have taken away the deer as belonging to the state like they do free range but that's a whole other ball of chit.

High fence or low fence he didn't have permission to be on the property. He wasn't sniping deer standing in the bar ditch he was going deep into these ranches to poach trophy deer.

regarding the deer belonging to the people of the state; Same argument could be made for private ownership of land in general.

I agree - so trespassing is trespassing - how would you react if that guy showed up on YOUR property and while you are asleep fires off a rifle?? - much less shooting animals off of YOUR property - I am guessing most would not think it was a cool thing

I grew up with a bunch of road hunters. I shouldn’t say I grew up with them, but for a good portion of my early childhood into the second grade. My second stepdad was one, and he was a pretty indiscriminate killer of all God’s creatures. It’s been sort of glorified since this scumbag came onto the scene. He’s a great storyteller, but he is a bastard for what he has done.

We have a serial poacher out here. I am sick of the headless deer carcasses I find laying around the highway nearby. If I catch that scumbag I might be the one that ends up in prison.

F that dude

I have no doubt that he was a prolific poacher, but I think he also exaggerates. Some of his “accomplishments “ are a little hard to believe. But……….idk.

What I never hear talked about, regarding Beaty, is what he ever did with any of the meat. You don’t go several miles in on foot, kill several deer, and bring the meat back with you. If it was ever mentioned, I haven’t seen or heard it.

He left most of the meat there. Would sometimes carry out some backstraps

And sadly, youngsters (like the Hunter's Advantage podcasters), seem to see him in a positive light. Or at least a revenue generating light...

Anything for a buck these days, I guess...

No pun intended.

I Didn't know there were so many little angles on here. I think he is a good story teller. Do I agree with what he did NO.
So I'm sure no one likes movies about such people like Billy the Kid who killed real people not a bunch of deer.

Wait till someone kills the tall 8 pointer off your place from the road, brags about it to the local boys, leaves the carcass in a nearby ditch, and your local conservation officer thinks you did it. It will change your perspective.

I make no claims to be an angel…and I like a story as much as the next fellow.

I especially like the story of Billy the Kid, a dashing story until Pat Garrett gave him a lesson in “what goes around, comes around”. Had Mr. Beaty gotten a similar dose of karma, Costner might have already done an epic film treatment of his tale.

As it stands…well, we know how it stands.
