Grandson has a 2013 Road Ranger with a bad head gasket. The dealer is wanting $8 grand to fix. Did not get super hot.
Not going down that road. Dealer says hard to work on and parts are high. Appreciate your thoughts on this problem.

Dealer will always be high. Find a smaller shop that specializes in repair of these vehicles. You're still going to "pay that man his money" but the sting may not be as bad.

The head will likely need decked.

I’ve had a couple of Brit cars. I had to work on them quite often, but finally became ‘one with the car’, as I could hear a noise and know what was causing it. I’ll never own another one.

For what it's worth, my understanding is those vehicles don't have to overheat to have head gaskets go bad. Supposedly it happens because the block and the heads are made of two different metals and expand /contract at different temperatures which eventually causes gasket leaks.

Unfortunately that was a POS when he bought it for way too much money. They are expensive to maintain and need it often

Land Rovers are the most unreliable cars on the road. If he drives one he should be able to fix one $$$.
My wife years ago used to be the cashier at Frisco LR, Ive heard many stories about what a sh*tty car they are.

They should come with a creeper and coveralls, cuz you'll need them.

That deal about the head and the block being different material causing the problem is BS. There are thousands of Chevrolet SBC and BBC’s running around with cast iron blocks and aluminum heads not blowing head gaskets

Yeah, my '69 Jaguar XKE had dual Stromberg's. Constant battle to keep them synchronized.

Agree with machinist. If you were talking Ford Chevy Dodge Toyota Etc regarding a truck or SUV or any of the Japanese SUVs, there are probably mechanics on every other corner that could accommodate that fix. They are going to have to locate a British repair shop and it's going to be quite pricey. I'm assuming he hasn't had that vehicle long or they would have already had a shop already attached to the father's credit card.

Sounds excessive even from my perspective unless it's a Range Rover (not a "Road Ranger" that I though might be a Ford Ranger?).

If it is in fact a Range Rover, I am surprised it's that cheap. Aside from either diesel, I am not sure there is a GM vehicle that would cost that much to replace a head gasket on. And most if not all newer vehicles cannot have the head decked if following manufacturer procedure. There is not enough tolerance. A warped head should be replaced. The Caddy 4100/4.5/4.9 was an aluminum block with iron heads and they liked to blow head gaskets but not as much as their replacement, the Northstar.
