I keep a daily log, I can look back years and tell you what we did that day.
I’ve had to look back many times, no problem.

Well before I retired, the company I worked for was in a huge acquisition phase, and I acquired a bunch of new reports (people). They were mostly at distant sites, and I had no idea what they did, but suspected that many of them did very little. I asked them all to email me with an outline of what they thought their responsibilities were. I found that their idea of what was required was very different from what was actually required. It was obvious that we didn’t need most of them. Also very informative was their response to a detailed bullet point type questionnaire I sent out. They were to answer the questions and then rate themselves as to their performance. They were to grade themselves from A to D. It was very interesting that the people I regarded as D level rated themselves as A level. The A level folk all rated themselves as B level.

Since overhead is mostly people, I was to reduce staff. I was told that going forward each person was to do the work of 2 people. I thought that was crazy, but it worked. If I cut out the ‘work’ that didn’t really need to be done, we could do the real work with about a third of the previous headcount. Over time, we actually cut staff more than that.

All that was 30 years before Elon Musk.

One thing I left out earlier, is that the aggressive company I worked for back then had a procedure that Elon Musk might be doing. They would reduce staff in certain departments (started with HR) until that department either quit functioning or could barely function. They would then allow staffing to grow to a point where things worked again. It was somewhat shocking at the time, but looking back, it did work. We were never again overstaffed.

I lead 5 manufacturing plants in North America, I don’t do much weekly, mostly at month end closing is where most of the reporting is done however we have many automated reports ( Power BI ) that show daily progress on many things. I could come up with what I do to add value any given day.

Only type of 'reports' I've ever had to do were sales commission reports and those were usually monthly.

But since y'all asked, I:

Worked on 24 clients.
Deep cleaned my office daily.
Washed 21 loads of laundry - just work-related laundry.
Answered 30 texts from clients trying to schedule appointments.
Completed my portion of my annual evaluation.

I sold a lot of parts and drank some beer. That’s what my reports looked like when I was working for someone else. My bosses could look at the numbers and and my expense account to see what I did every quarter. I never cared much for reporting!

Drove to SA for a conference. 3 days at conference. Drove back Friday.
Felt like a big waste of 200-300k.
