I set up a new blind here at home, sometimes I just like to go out and sit. I went this afternoon hunting hogs that have been coming in, I just bought a new rifle last week. A 308, boar hog came to the feeder, I put the cross hair behind his ear and missed at about 80 yds, I couldn’t believe it. My oldest son said “ dad, you aren’t as steady as you used to be “ I’m taking my 270 next time lol.

Yup, it’s that new rifle. Can’t trust a new rifle.

Did you make sure it’s sighted in?

This years deer season I started out taking out a different gun every time I went out. I got a couple deer, then gun shot a couple. We recovered them, but it wasn't the way I like to take them. My buddy was giving me crap about switching guns, so I said I was just going to stick with my tried and true .308 Savage. I went back to the range and put a couple boxes of ammo through it to make sure I was dialed in. I've taken five since then, none have died out of my sight.
Just spend some more time with the .308 and you will be fine.

I missed the biggest deer I’ve ever seen when I was a senior in high school. 150 yard easy shot. I used my dad’s rifle with a rest and the buck ran off. We were driving around drinking beer and my rifle was at the house. The rifle hadn’t been shot in years. My dad never shot anything unless it was with a shotgun. I sighted the rifle in that afternoon and it was 12” high at 100 yards.

Did you make sure it’s sighted in? My son shot it, we set up a target at 90 yds, he hit dead center bullseye, I said there’s no use wasting anymore bullets, I should have shot it

As a young married man, my father was lamenting missing a deer to his father-in-law (my maternal grandfather). My grandfather (an old school Fredericksburg "Cherman") was NO hunter and only owned one firearm (a .22 that he referred to as "the twenty second"). So Daddy was justifiably miffed when his FIL announced that he knew why my Dad had missed his deer. Regardless, Daddy couldn't WAIT to hear the rationale...
"You missed that deer because there's space ALL AROUND him" was the explanation.
Daddy had to admit that he wasn't WRONG...

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Late this past season, my son and I took one of his buddies hunting, and his buddy missed. My son was reassuring him, saying " It’s OK, everybody misses." Goading him, I said "I don't " he argued his point, and I asked, "Have you ever seen me miss?" He shot me a look and quit talking. Lol. He's never seen me miss an animal, and as far as he knows, I never have. Lol. They left that evening, and I proceeded to miss a chip-shot the next morning with my Hawken. Lol. Serves me right.

Absolutely. Anybody that hasn't missed is either a bald-faced liar or hasn't shot very much game! That said, I practice one helluva lot (off the bench) to keep that foolishness to a minimum.

Yup! If a fellow hasn’t missed, he hasn’t missed YET. Of course, I’d rather miss entirely than do an ugly bullet placement.

Yup! If you have hunted a lot and never missed, you have not hunted a lot. Everybody misses. What's important is how well you tell the story. I usually blame the sudden shift in the Earths rotation moving the bullet off target.
"Group think" is not thinking. It is the lack of independent thought. It is a cancer of the mind.

Looked at a lease once and the manager's buddy rode with us. According to him, the buddy and his children all shot deer at 4-500 yards in the ear hole with a .22-250. I have zero tolerance for liars, and I'm related to a few.

Go easy on liars, cause when it comes to fishing and golf, I have stretched the truth a bit. For hunting though, I am scrupulously honest.
