Well the wife decided to surprise me with a long hill country weekend in Fredericksburg and Tapatio Springs Resort for our 30th anniversary. We live in N. Dallas so it went down like this. I chose the travel route and always the driver.
Left the house Friday at 9:40 am, took Hwy 67 south past Glen Rose, then 220 to Hico, south on 281 just past Hamilton then right on FM 3302 by the airport, south on 2005 to Goldthwaite. It is around 12:30, decided to grab a bite in Goldthwaite, there was a El Tapatio that’s parking lot was jammed full, to hungry to wait ended up at Bootleg Chicken which only had one car in the parking lot and it was two old ladies leaving. Should have eaten at El Tapatios for Bootleg Chicken sucked!
Now going down Hwy 16 south of Goldthwaite to Llano is a beating, one lane for construction. Wife picked out a nice place in Fredericksburg on the west side of town called the Hill Country Herb Garden (https://www.hillcountryherbgarden.com/). Nice facility with spa, restaurant, nice cottages and other amenities. Every morning there is a basket at your front door by 8:30 with a good little breakfast in it, first morning crepes, biscuit and OJ. Second morning Quiche. Guys this place was full of women!!
Friday afternoon went to the Pacific War Museum which was a must see if you are in town, did not get to see everything so went back Saturday am.Friday afternoon drove to a Peach Market, then that night pigged out at Auslanders, I had the Jager Schnitzel, wife had the Jalapeno, cheese sausage which were both delicious.
Saturday morning had breakfast in bed from the resort, bacon filled Crepes, biscuit and OJ which was very good!! Drove into town around 10:30 to the visitor center, there is a long line at the Old German Bakery & Restaurant, ended up eating Rouladen for lunch there, it was just okay. Drove to Luckenbach to see Waylon & the Boys. Went back to town, walked over 8,000 steps going in and out of all kinds of places. Favorite places were the spice and peach stores that had a ton of delicious samples to try. Saturday night had some wine and dinner at the resort, the wife and I both ordered the Steak Oscar 7. Oz filet topped with lump crab meat, fricking delicious!!
Sunday morning check out and headed to the Sunrise Café, good grub right there! Then drove Hwy 87 to I 10 into Boerne, right on Johns Rd into the Tapatio Springs Resort around 11:30. The rooms look like they have the same original décor from when it was built in 1981 and no Microwave?. Tee time is at 12:30. Even though all of the fairways and greens were dormant, loved the course layout. Hit my driver, woods and irons really good, putting sucked. Had dinner at the resort that night, ordered bone in Pork Chop $30.00 comes with one side. wife had a Cheeseburger and side of bacon mac & cheese for $21.00. My pork chop was butterflied, bland not very tender, stuffed/loaded baked potato was very average. Wife loved her Cheeseburger so there was one win.
Monday morning time to meander home, decided to go to Bluebonnet Café in Marble Falls for a late breakfast. Dumb Azz me did not look at the map thoroughly and took Johns Rd into town at 8:30 through all of the school zones, then down busy main street, then east on backed up Hwy 46 in rush hour traffic. Just out of town I notice a nice looking FM road 3351heading north and almost pulled over to see where it went, but No I kept the 46 beating going to HWY 281 and the driving beating continued up 281 all the way up close to the river. Turns out FM 3351 is a easy scenic drive right by Guadalupe State Park up to Kendalia, then would have turned right another scenic rd. FM 473 to Hwy 281 which would have been past all of the BS. Had a great breakfast at Bluebonnet café then the fun drive back to Big D. It was a wonderful 4 days with my lovely wife and will do it again. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/02/full-1274-446382-9.jpg)

You should have stuck around Luckenbach on Saturday. Jason Boland and the Stragglers played. It was a great show! Looks like y'all had a fun trip.

' Drove to Luckenbach' waste of time? Interesting, but nothing there when we went. Bluebonnet is pretty good but a long wait. Hico chocolate shop was pretty good too. You get to the outdoor part of the museum with the PT boats? Glad you had a good time.

Glad you had a good trip. Excellent call on Bluebonnet. Yes, Tapatio has been underwhelming since they opened. And yes, the Mrs. is a very pretty lady. How the hell'd you manage that?

El Tapatio in Goldthwaite is fair; go for breakfast and get the Dragon omelet. If you need lunch, stay on 183 south of town past the 16 turn, and go to Mary's for their catfish or shrimp on Fridays. Sorry to hear Bootleg Chicken wasn't good; I've only eaten there once, and also was not impressed. Their steak fingers look really tasty so I may give them one more shot at some point. Fisher Street Bar and Grill is the best dinner place in town, and also open for lunch.
Glad you had a good getaway, and congrats on the anniversary!

Looks like you had a great trip. The wife and I get up to Fredericksburg almost every year. Usually go by the Trades Day Market and then into town to do some shopping and lunch.

A buddy of mine got married at Tapatio Springs last March, to say the rooms were disappointing is an understatement. They need a massive upgrade especially for what they charge.

Great trip for sure! Loved the read!
Fredericksburg is my wife and mine favorite town. We take the camper down in the spring, fall and right before Christmas each year and stay at Arch Resort and RV Park. Auslander's s our favorite restaurant. Just incredible German food! We always have breakfast each morning at the Sunrise cafe. We'll drop some serious coins at Rustlin's Rob's and Lock Stock and Barrel on spices and olive oils. You'll always find us on Friday or Sat evening at Hondo's for their live classic country music. Just a great town to get away to! Going the first week of May for a long weekend!
Distance is not the issue, but the winds can make it interesting!

Mistake or unscrupulous bartender After playing golf the wife and I went into the club house to order a couple of draft beers, told the bartender to open a tab in case we wanted another one, he said fine need to hold on to your credit card, me no problem. The wife had one, I had two, bar tab was $36.00 for three Miller lights on draft in a plastic cups ($12 each) okay I get it we are in a resort, close my tab out total I signed for was $45.00. So Friday the wife with a serious but puzzled look on her face ask me if I charged $285.00 worth of whatever at the bar after our round of golf, me hell no. Turns out our buddy bartender that my wife did not like to begin with, charged us an additional $285.00 on a separate bill for So what say ye, mistake or dirt bag bartender?

You got hosed. The numbers don't align to a mistake. I know you've already called your CC company. Hopefully, they will pursue him for criminal behavior.

We chose Auslanders and Sunrise Cafe based of of your Fredericksburg thread in the On The Road section, so Thank You for the heads up, great grub! Thought about going to Hondos, looked and sounded like a neat place, next time.
