Inexpensive and sometimes looked down on and maligned. I have a couple of safe queen Smiths and some Colts of various calibers. Some, 9 shot semis and other 6 shooter revolvers.

However. When I leave town, the Judge goes with me. When I get on a 4wheeler to run around on my land, the Judge goes along. When I crank the tractor, the Judge goes along. Being a revolver, I don’t have to worry about it being in battery. It’s earned a couple of scratches. It’s never let me down or misfired.

So why doesn’t it get more respect? Why is it less expensive?

At least the Judge looks good. The Hi-Point receives the same snobbish attitude, but is butt ugly. I sold my Hi-Point years ago but when I had it, I tried and tried to get it to jam or malfunction in some way but it never did. In another thread some folks got excited about the Ruger carbine. If I wanted a pistol round carbine I'd buy a Hi-Point and save a bunch of $. Anyway, it's not just the Judge that gets snobs, it's Taurus in general, minus the TX22.

It’s too heavy.

S&W Governor is a much better gun.

Why do you day that? I find it as good as my Colts and Smiths

I point it, pull the trigger and it fires.

They make a polymer one, but even the all stainless one isn’t really that heavy

It’s goofy looking and a bit specialized, but a great tool. Especially for someone with land and in copperheaded rattlebug land. They also make for a way to get a limit of dove if the birds are especially thick, lost that last bet. Love mine.

As far as a more compact options for snake control, A Smith 638 with rat shot fills the bill nicely. But you can also have a 629 with rat shot for a gun roughly the same size but with way more versatility

I've never seen a Taurus that was finished out very well. Picked up a pt92 once that was brand new and the trigger didn't work, seen more than one revolver that the timing was off on the cylinders. Seen several of their 1911s not work when everyone else's does. Also never seen one of their revolvers with a trigger that was worth a durn. If someone gave me one I would only own it long enough to get rid of it

I was at a match once and a guy was complaining about 1911's never working. I thought that was odd as mine always worked and I asked him what he had. His answer was a Taurus.....

And I I have looked at them more than once, as I wish somebody made a cheap revolver that wasn't sub par

∆∆∆∆∆. That was copy and pasted from my post on the Taurus judge thread from the other day. So if part of that response doesn't seem pertinent that's cause I ain't wasting time deleting it

Seems like dove hunting with a judge would be illegal. Do they make some sort of weird plug for them?

Great gun

They don't get respect because folks want to justify the stuff they spent more on that does the same thing.

Mine rides in my zero turn and tractor with me at all times. It's killed numerous copperheads.

My only complaint is that I waited too long to buy one since I didn't want to spend $500 on it.

ETA: I have a model 85 38 special Taurus that's fantastic with a smooth action and nice trigger. 24/7 in 40S&W is my bedside gun. Have owned a few other Taurus pistols over the years and all have been great. I've actually had more failures with Glocks out at my place than with Taurus pistols.

I did have a sight get loose on my Taurus one time - only issue I ever had with any of them. Sent it in and had it back in my hands in less than 3 weeks. 15 years later I still own the gun and it still works great.

After a little more research, I think they are less legal than I thought they were. In fact I don't think I would tell anybody if I ever hunted a dove with a judge. Here's some things from the tpwd website:

A shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds. Shotguns must not be larger than 10-gauge, must be fired from the shoulder, and must be incapable of holding more than three shells. Shotguns capable of holding more than three shells must be plugged with a one-piece filler which cannot be removed without disassembling the gun, so the gun’s total capacity does not exceed three shells.

That part about fired from the shoulder rules out the judge or contender. Had that discussion in the 1990s with a game warden as we were shooting sleet and I was shooting singles with the Contender and he said it is not legal since not fired from the shoulder. He agreed I could kill dove with the Contender but better not for legal reasons.

If you want to buy a whole new gun for the gimmick of shooting .410 out of a handgun, go for it.

I know someone who shot 2 quail with one those past weekend. I wouldn't have given a plug nickel for that idea coming from a short rifled barrel.
