SHUSH Act: Will the New Bill Change Suppressor Regulations?
Lawmakers introduced a new bill aimed at deregulating suppressors and treating them like firearm accessories. Introduced on Jan. 30, "Silencers Help Us Save Hearing Act" would classify suppressors as gun accessories, therefore removing them from under the purview of the National Firearms Act.

I'd normally say this is DOA, but after the last couple weeks If it were ever going to happen, this is the only time I can think of that i could make it through.

An ATF RAC I know is sure hoping it gets passed and signed. Silencers are their largest PITA. They were never even in the original proposed NFA. Misinformed influential ranchers lobbied for them to be included.

This same piece of legislation has been introduced I believe every session for the last decade roughly. It has never stood a chance. But, as Kyle stated, these are different times. Who knows.

Can you imagine the whining and, most of all, the stupid stories and misinformation about ‘silencers’ that will come from the left? “30 rounds in 1/2 second” and “30 caliber magazine clip” will be child’s play compared with the crap we’ll hear.

Agreed. And it will be the job of all of us in the know, to correct the misinformation. All the YouTube gun guys will make videos showing people that are not informed that suppressors do not make super sonic ammo "silent" only quieter. And, if a suppressor is treated like a firearm through an FFL, the buyer goes through an NICS check at point of sale. Then the non-felon leaves with his or her suppressor immediately. The best argument I have is buying ANY engine, from chainsaw to car or truck, it is going to come with a muffler. In my 27 years in Fire/EMS I have seen countless deaths due to car and motorcycle wrecks. I have seen 10 gun deaths, and 9 of them were suicide.

I can count on one hand the offenses involving a silencer and they were all junk made from a Maglight tube or something similar and were possessed by a felon.

To me you almost make the argument for the tight regulation. Meaning if they were truly treated as a firearm accessory and you could buy them without a 4473 or NFA process do you think you'd still be able to make that statement? Don't get me wrong, I don't want them regulated but you saying what you said in that post could be used as an argument against deregulation of them. Interesting point of view by someone in the trenches. I'd like to see them as an over the counter deal not even a 4473...but I believe that is likely a pipe dream....best I think we can hope for is they are removed from the NFA.

do yall have a can for every rifle now? I have 1 Rimfire 1 Pistol and 3 30 cals. 1 of the 30 cals I never use got it in trade for a website I built and then a form 1 I also never use LOL. If this were to pass I'd definitely have one for every gun I own to that I shoot suppressed.

Street guns get passed around and traded for dope between criminals. They want easy to conceal over any other quality. A Glock with a silencer making it twice as long as one without it is pretty undesirable. Gangsters in particular want something to be as loud as possible too. They want to make an impression on their enemies.

From the limited research that I have done on this new SHUSH act, it looks like they want to classify a silencer as any other firearm accessory. Over the counter, no background check or anything. Just like buying a weapon light or stock. Makes sense to me. It is clearly not a firearm. If you go buy one, and put a bullet in it, it will not fire without the gun. If you bought a big one, you might be able to use it as a really expensive club, but otherwise, they are harmless by themselves.

I went ahead and paid for and did the paper work for my first suppressor this morning. I’d love to just be able to buy one as easy as buying any other accessories to the firearms but for now I’m just excited to have my first one in the works…. Maybe my second one will be as easy as buying a scope or a bog pod or any other over the counter item

I like the British term moderator personally, a little more harmless sounding than suppressor and silencer. Over there they're pretty much standard equipment.

Maybe it should be called a muffler so it can be normalized in everyone’s brain that it functions and is same as the mufflers on vehicles/ mowers/etc. The younger gen or imports who grew up driving all electric vehicles may not get it…
