So what would you say to young outdoorsman on here who think they don’t need it?

It’s in relation to Sniper John’s thread. I also think he might have advice about cleaning and monitoring a cut or wound.

Does he smoke too? I would think this is a no brainer by now. Most folks my age (experienced human) have had to have skin cancers removed. That's not the main risk. Those cancers can soread andgo to parts of your body that require major sugery, chemo or radiation. I've had 2 out of three and none were pleasant.

By and large, Sunscreen is terrible for you

A zinc based one like blue lizard isn’t as bad. Charcoal based ones are the best.

Cover up and avoid sunscreen. Slathering yourself with chemicals isn’t the answer

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have had three surgeries on my head and face. One that required a skin graph. Long incisions that looked terrible for about 6-8 weeks. Also, a doctor that does this kind work is expensive.

It's too bad people can't learn to use sunscreen. Wish I had used sunscreen in my youth.

I read sunscreen is worse for you than the sun. But no one knows what to believe anymore.

The takeaway appears to be choose the right sunscreen not sunscreen is bad for you.

I've had a bunch of basil cell's cut/burned off, and a couple of the squamos cell type as well (MOS). I say choosing the right sunscreen is the ticket.

I can only imagine you swabbing on the sunscreen. I used to use baby oil with monkey blood. I think it may have been an intensifier

It doesn’t make a lick of sense that covering yourself with chemicals is better for you than natural sunlight.

Stop believing the lies. Did Covid teach you nothing? The same people pushing this garbage are the same ones telling you that cereal is healthier than meat.

Your diet is the problem. It’s not the sun. Wake up, people. Think about it. Stop listening to the people making money off of you being sick.

This is exactly why I drink more Ovaltine and take Geritol.

I never wore sunscreen, just would get a early tan in the spring and stay tanned all year long until winter kicked in. I did that from teenage till I was in my mid 50's.

I would Bass Fish 3 to 4 times per day and only wear shorts and went shirtless or wore a wife beater T Shirt.

I went to my Dermatologist last year and she did some kind of therapy where they put some kind of chemical like on our head and shine a bright light for 10 minutes and it destroys cancer cells, had 2 sessions of that.

She also did my upper body two sessions as well.

I have her burn off any thing that looks suspicious, so far I haven't tested for cancer on anything removed.

I have bass fished, year round, on the lake, since 1980. Back then we fished from sun up to dusk. In Winter we quail hunted.
As soon as sunscreen came out I jumped on board.

Let me add that I'm blonde haired and fair skinned. Ane we fished in temps up to and sometimes over 100. (You can catch some big bass in 100 degree weather)

Recently I saw a dermatologist for my first skin exam by a specialist ever. I am now 69.
He found nothing. He congratulated me on using sunscreen all those years.

I’d say use it.

I never knew there was sunscreen until around 20 years ago.

We always used Hawaiin Tropic as a kid, we thought it moisturized your skin in the sun

Sister used to mix Baby Oil and Iodine to make homemade Sun Tan Lotion

My first visit to MD Anderson in Houston started with a long questionnaire on multiple topics. A big section was devoted to sunburn and how often you had been badly burned, how old were you at the time, and such as that. Other than I been badly sunburned a lot, that’s all the info I had. I spent my youth outside, working and playing. Nobody counts sunburn. In the last decade I’ve had several chunks cut off me. Looking back, I wish we’d had sunscreen when I was a kid and a young man. At least I was smart enough to use a strong sunscreen in the decade I taught tennis.

When I was hitting the country bars (Bell Star) in the late 80's, my nickname was "Tan". Fried myself every spring/summer. 2005 found Melanoma. Luckily it was insitu, dodged a bullet.

I see my Dermatologist every 6 months, earlier if I see something weird. My Dermatologist is super Conservative politically (MAGA). He suggests Sunscreen, hats and long-sleeved shirts. Those thin, performance shirts.

You're all grown, so, do what you think is best for you.

I still got dark till about 4 years ago. No more burning for me.

I believe a lot of it has to do with genetics, as I got this condition from my mom who's battled them her whole life.

Derm always asks if any of my family members had skin cancer.
