Considering we are a community of outdoorsmen, I imagine a few here have gone through this a time or two. Six months ago I had mohs surgery to remove a squamous cell carcinoma from my nose and some other stuff frozen off my face. But I still have a few pre cancers or actinic keratosis on my head and who knows what can't be seen yet. I started a 14 day Fluorouracil treatment 5 days ago on my entire head, face, and neck. No side effects other than feeling a little shaky today and nothing has changed yet, but I expect they will start lighting up and getting bad any day now. So anyway, how did it go for you? Any tips that I might not have been told or thought of already?

Dermatologist had me putting some kind of medical cream on my pre cancer spots. Then, she had me start putting Vaseline on them that is working better. Almost gone on my face and starting now on the back of my hands. Try it.

First a question, are you doing Calcipot/5-FU (Calcipotriene/Fluorouracil) or just straight Fluorouracil?
This summer I did the blended version of the two. Mine was a 7 day application and by day 3 I was blistered like I had laid out in the sun for days. By day 7 the bad spots on my face were weeping and bleeding.
By day 14 with no applications for 7 days I was really blistered, weeping, bleeding and pealing but it was starting to ease up on the pain. By day 21 I was still a little bit red, but I had nice smooth skin.
The dermatologist was very satisfied with the results.
Best of luck on this treatment. I will be judiciously applying sun screen before daylight when on the lake and have purchased a few new sun hats.

I use it twice a year - cover my face, neck, ears, etc over two weeks - I have only had Keratosis spots which are pre skin cancer - see my doctor every 6 months to make sure I have not missed anything

I have used it on my entire face. Not a good experience but did its job. At least my Dr. is happy. Try using Aquaphor if your Dr says it is OK. Sure relives the pain.

Straight Fluorouracil twice a day for 14 days. Today some areas of my neck are starting to feel like a mild sunburn, so it may be starting to do it's work. Considering I am doing my entire head, face, and neck I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best.
Yea, it will be life changing. I picked up some UPF50 hooded long sleeve shirts and neck gaiters for the lake and will start wearing my cowboy hat again most days. And of course sun screen.

I would hope the first time is the worst and the follow up times not as bad?

That doesn’t sound fun at all. After my brush with skin cancer my Dermatologist has me doing the light therapy. So far twice on my head and once on my arms. Like a light sunburn. Aloe gel with Lidocaine helps. Bought a 7 pack of long sleeve SPF50 infused shirts and diligent about wearing headwear outside now.

I got about 12 days into the 14 day treatment and said no more. This is a pic of around day 10. Was applying it at night and was like trying to sleep through a really bad sun burn every night. End of treatment my dermatologist was happy with results but will have to repeat down the road. For about a week my buddies were making Wade Wilson jokes (Deadpool).

Guys, it doesn’t have to be this way. The sun is not bad for you. It doesn’t even make sense that it would be. I know I’m not a reliable source. I’m a nobody. But you’ve been lied to your entire life. We all have. I’m not the expert, but I do listen to those that are. It’s your diet that causes this stuff. Avoiding the sun and covering yourself in chemicals is not the answer. Take a minute and think about it. Are a bunch of manmade chemicals better for you than what nature provides? Does it make any sense that the sun is giving you cancer? It’s our best form of vitamin d, which is not only essential, but one of our most important vitamins. It does not add up. You’ve been told that the sun causes cancer by the same people that tell you that Lucky Charms is healthier than beef, and that the Covid “vaccine” is not only necessary but safe. Fats are bad and grains are good. It’s all backwards. It’s all a lie. The information is out there. Stop listening to the main stream narrative and do your own research. It’s a lot like politics. Listen to the usual suspects and you’d be voting for democrats. Health information is no different. The “experts” that push the modern day diet have been paid off. It’s a scam. Your typical physician is not versed in these things. They regurgitate what they’ve been taught in school. How reliable are our schools?

Sorry for going off on a tangent. I just hate to see decent people going down the wrong path. I’ve seen proper diets change people’s lives in unbelievable ways. The real life evidence is out there. It’s not hard to find, either. The sun is not killing you. Your diet is.

I have no incentive to push this. I’m not selling anything. I just hate to see people believing lies that are detrimental to their health. I realize many will criticize me since I’m not a physician and their doctor told them otherwise. That’s fine. Believe what you want. I’m just telling you that there is a better way, and the evidence speaks for itself. If you’re interested, you can contact me, or you can look it up for yourself. If not, whatever. It’s your life.

Yea, well, thanks for your concern, but I started this thread to ask about a particular type of topical chemotherapy drug used to kill fast-growing abnormal cells in actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma. And for any advice from others who have used it. This regardless of what caused it. I would appreciate keeping this thread closer to topic. At this point to something that might actually be of use after the fact.

I've had to use it twice on my face and neck. Get the softest wash cloth you can find to make cleaning it not feel like sand paper. It will eventually feel like putting acid on your face.
It did what it was supposed to do though. I used Aquaphor as well.

It has never been bad for me - after a few days the spots where there is a Keratosis turn brownish and red color so it looks like the measles. When I make my 6 month appointment with my doctor he freezes off any I missed - I guess I am lucky I do not have as many as some of the other folks pictures on here so for me it has never really been painful

Did it for the first time in November. The application was a bit uncomfortable but didn’t seem terrible. The healing part was pretty bad for me. My face and ears itched and burned almost nonstop for a solid week. After the old dead skin came off it began to feel better but it was a couple months before I got the nerve up to start shaving again.

My mil, and fil have both used it recently. It’s pretty rough looking after a few days.

Had my annual dermatologist appointment back in mid December, He said I had some pre cancerous cells on my cheeks but not bad. He prescribed same cream as you are using. He old me to wait until after Christmas unless I wanted any family pictures to look like a uneven horrible sunburn. I started the twice a day treatment after the first of the year putting it from my ears to my nose, below the cheeko bone up to beside my eye brows. Didn't see any reaction for the first 5-7 days, then it started feeling and looking like a mild sunburn but where my CPAP headgear passes by the side of my eyes, it started getting pretty raw. I suspect the silicone straps rubbing against my skin while laying on my side added to the extent of rawness. I had people at church if I had gotten stitches removed recently as it left a pretty nasty area where the rubbing was and as it healed and peeled, left some scarring. This wasn't even where the Dr. stated the pre cancerous cells were located.

Just use caution if you wear a CPAP as it will really irritate that area of contact more so than where it isn't.

also agree with Sneaky that we are led to extremes by the medical community and the drug manufacturers, but I will leave it at that to stay focused on the matter at hand.

This is my final day. I never got as bad as the pictures posted, but I do feel others will look at me like I am a recovering addict with meth sores on my head and face. That is ok. It means the medication did what it is supposed to do. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal. The Crappie and Catfish are calling to me.

Congrats on finishing!

My dermatologist originally prescribed, three years ago, the 5fu/calcipotriene combo (for just 7 days) for AK on my scalp and face. Worked well, FWIW.

I've repeated the process a couple of times since, but held off this year because my skin was still looking pretty decent (I had a checkup just last week and my dermatologist agreed).

I'm still getting used to regularly applying sunscreen, and wearing a broad-brimmed hat.
