430 not 500 and not WR. Shot in I think 17 or 19 , I think it’s Montana archery record
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, b/c they know not victory nor defeat"- #26 TR

It WAS the Archery record @ 430 back in 2017. It is no longer the Archery record. It is Montana record though. Up until this year archery record 443 I think

12 bulls over 400 is insane. What the old saying only 10% of hunters kill bulls and of the 10%, 50% kill bulls every year…. And then there is this guy

86 Bull Elk tags! How do you do that? he is an easy drive to WA, OR,ID, MT, Wy so he is probably hunting 3-5 states a year and probably pulling a tag in Utah/Nevada also . Idaho you use to be able to get two bull tags. My guess is since he targeting that class of bull he spent some money on Gov and raffle tags. I put in for elk in 6 states and hunt 1-2 a year. Thats just draw tags. I could buy land owner tags in probably 4-5 states if I was wealthy

The guy that killed the WR I posted, lots of people know of the bull as it was in a very low tag number unit and the guy bought the Gov tag and killed it back in Dec. We chased 400” two years ago but never got close enough to kill him, he was killed after season in next door unit by Gov tag holder

Killed a good 6x5 bull in 1967 in Arizona. My first elk hunt. Was there in the USAF. Got out, returned to Texas and haven’t tried since.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

I wish i could get fired up about elk hunting.
Been several times, shot a good 6x6 about 10 years ago now and been a few times since.
Just can’t seem to get excited about hunting them though, even during their bugling season
I have a choice between a 200” muley and a 380” elk I’m shooting the mule deer 10 out of 10 times.
What’s odd is I do like Red Deer, which is very similar to an elk. I would hunt those again in a heartbeat. Must be a holdover from my German and Czech heritage
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I enjoy the walking, bugling, and actually the challenge of finding and getting close to an elk.
