What are the unique things or experiences you have with people working in the oil patch?

Do they commonly use profanity?

I have visited there related frac sand production and also a few times offshore, but have never really been around it.

What is it like and the people?

People out here aren’t as sensitive as your average person, though they’re not as tough as they used to be. Some are quite obnoxious, especially within certain groups, but most are regular folk just earning a living.

I work in a field that interacts with oil & gas field and office hands semi-regularly.

I’ve found most of them to be upstanding people and never had an issue with any company hand, from the gauges to the office staff

Rig and Derrick hands I’ve known plenty, and while they’re not the upper echelon of society, most are just trying to make a living.

It’s nothing like what you see on Landman.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It's not just the oil patch, F Bombs fly on most job sites I've been around. You don't have to partake with others doing it, avoid it and move on.

It's always fascinated me to hear other's take on the oilfield. I heard the term "oilfield trash" a bunch growing up and tried to understand why people thought that. I do know I've been very impressed with the work ethic, creativity, and the "never give up" attitude found in most workers. I've also always appreciated the fact that arid, barren, flat, and often downright ugly terrain can produce such immense wealth if you're willing to work hard.

My neighbors son got a job with an oil co in Odessa and the promoted to their Austin HQ. He tried the same language and tactics in Austin, soon had to find another job.

I met some of those guys at a bar in Midland. Shot pool with one of the twins. Nice guy.

The show had realistic footage. They were on an actual rig. But it was obviously dramatized quite a bit. Day to day work out here, even on a drilling rig, is pretty mundane. Things can get pretty western, but it’s rare.

Odessa has grown and oil field workers change over time. Migrant workers that have the consistency of world class case of the squirts, we have plenty of those. Majority of what are travelling through are check chasers so can't expect much from them. May sound narrow minded but it's ain't the town I grew up in. New money oil men and industry bound area. Come to west Texas and make that money...we have more ways to take it from you than you can find ways to make it. My company seems to hire every reject there is in their field.

The most often I see or hear the term oil field trash is from oil field workers. Most notably the oil field trash and proud bumper stickers.

Some folks think flat arid terrain is purdy! I’ll take south texas brush over rocks and hills any day.

I don't believe it is confined to the patch, as much as the type of jobs. You see the same thing in the oil industry here in the Dakotas or Wy oil fields. All my friends in the refineries speak the same way. Any predominantly male activity, with little interaction with the general public tends to be rough. The US military in the 60-80's was bad. I have several friends who have worked in the prison system as guards and they are the worst. I think some of it is the intensity which the words are used, the context, or emotion is over done on TV shows. "Landman" is embarrassing for me to watch with the wife, even tho I might use some of the same words myself.

I concur….like everything else Hollywood’ed up….most was “based” on reality but way over the top compared to real life.

In my almost twenty years it’s been solid folks not afraid of real works trying to make a life for their families…. 2cents

Here's the sign hanging outside of "The Bar" downtown Midland. Not only do I approve of it, I applaud it.

We have members on here who work in or have been associated with the oil patch. It was interesting hearing their perspective. TV shows are made and sauced up for entertainment, not realism.

Their work is certainly appreciated otherwise we would live in a different world than today.

I worked in the oil business for 50 years, the final 45 running my own small oil company. The guys on the drilling rigs and pulling units for the most part are good hard working people. That really hasn't changed with the influx of Mexican employees. The language is nearly always rough, but I never found it different than it was when I worked one summer for a brick laying company in the sixties.

The men that I did not care for were the ones that came with the booms. Every time I saw the sales people showing up on location in their new top of the line pickups, ostrich boots and 4" belt buckles, I knew the another bust was coming. The oil business is a cyclical business. Failure to understand that can lead to disaster.

So true.

Spend a few hours at almost any Fire Station in America.

Away from the general public, we are terrible people. Often, especially to each other.
