I shot a 95 lb. Doe Saturday afternoon with my Omega X-7 and thought you guys might be interested in the results.

Here's the gun.

The load was:
240 grain .429 Speer Deep Curl
Harvester H15044 Crush Rib sabot
70 gr. (weight) Blackhorn 209
Winchester W-209 primer

The shot distance was 110 yards. She ran 40 yards after the shot.

Here are the autopsy photos.

I thought I took a picture of the exit wound but must not have depressed the phone's shutter button correctly because it's not on my phone.

According to her teeth she was 1 & 1/2 years old and is a welcome addition to the freezer.

By the way guys, did you notice that Rib Cage Spreader. I borrowed it from one of my hunting buddies and man, it's slick. You put it in the rib cavity in a closed position, pull it towards you and it opens the cavity and clicks/locks into place. I ordered one as soon as I got home.

How accurate is your rifle at that distance ? I've never shot a black powder rifle and don't know much about them ?

I'm a muzzleloading addict Yac. I think the current count of them sitting around the house in racks and closets is something like 19. Most are sidelocks (both caplocks and flintlocks) with two modern in-lines like the Omega X-7 thrown in. Somewhere in the mix are two shotguns and an underhammer. (Did I mention I'm an addict? grin )

Anyway, to answer your question, just about any modern in-line should be capable of no less than three-inch/5-shot groups at 100 yards. Most will do better than that. Both of my in-lines will keep five shots into an inch at 100 yards. But in any case, it does take a little bench time and load experimentation to get that. I developed the load I shot that doe with back in 2019 and have stuck with it ever since. Here's the final target from that load development session.

As you can see, there's quite a bit of drop at 150 yards. I don't shoot at game beyond that distance and only shoot past 100 yards if the conditions are ideal - good rest and relaxed standing still deer.

That's pretty cool, thanks for the info ! I had no idea they were so accurate. Nice deer by the way.
