What sucks is there are some stellar school districts that could be EVEN better if they got to keep all of their school tax base
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, b/c they know not victory nor defeat"- #26 TR

When my boys were in school the only thing the district cared about was passing the TAX/TASS Test, i think that was what it was called. Schools received more $$$ based off of this score.

This goes back to the “no child left behind act” by George W Bush. Prior to this act, the children were grouped, allowing high achievers to advance. Now curriculum is dumbed down. Children are taught as a collective, at a pace the low achievers can keep up. The result is a lower ceiling for all students. I think 2002 was the year Bush instituted that act. You are currently starting to see a second generation of students from parents who had the bar lowered when they were in school. Consequently many of these parents expect less academically from their own children.

It started in our district when FBO stated schools could not make immigrants prove residency. 1, 2, or 3 ESL kids per class ate up all the teachers' time.
I cannot speak to the No Child Left Behind being implemented as I did not have kids yet.

An agency that sets standards for good education is great. An agency that try’s to enact weird social programs is bad. I’m all for some of my tax money going to poorer districts to help them meet those good quality teaching standards without lowering the bar.
We should have the best quality public education on the planet. Also we should offer schooling opportunities on the trades if someone might be lesser on a traditional curriculum. A And if you don’t want to learn/grow then you get left behind.

We should have the best quality public education on the planet. When you take money from one district to give to another, you are lowering one to raise another. It’s that simple

Hard to learn anything when discipline cannot be enforced. Schools are a money pit with very little return without discipline. Not so sure every able bodied American should not be required to serve time in the military, especially if they are not hitting the standard in education. Every kid thinks they are the most important show in the school. Millions and millions of dollars spent on education when really all you need is a subject and some discipline applied to raise the expectations which are non-existent as of now. Rinky dink school districts in Texas are spending millions and millions of dollars on facilities which include new gyms, plastic football fields, new buildings when the district cannot even hire qualified teachers. and I am sure there are some kickbacks to the superintendents for pushing these building projects to completion. A school is students, qualified teachers and a place to meet, not facilities so lavish that the students will never attain that level of extravagance again in their lives. No discipline, not enough qualified teachers, unwilling students, and sparkling facilities equals millions of dollars wasted.

I used to get upset about the lavish facilities, but you have to look at how schools are funded, they are funded by head count. School districts have to find away to attract families into the district as students and families in the district age out. I live where I live specifically due solely to the school district, I’m moving shortly after last kid is out

Reminds me of those tests that I've seen online taken by 7th-8th? graders back in the late 1800's. No comparison.

Anyone else think that bringing back actual textbooks might help the reading scores a little bit?

I used to love the smell of new textbooks, lol.
I remember in grade school the teacher making copies. I remember how warm the paper felt and the smell of the ink was wonderful!

I agree and leave the phones at home. And make them use an abacus and slide rule so they have those skills mastered upon graduation.
