Installer showed up this afternoon, and installation was quick and understandable. Brightspeed gave us 10 MBS. I’m getting well over 100 right now. About the same $ we were paying Brightspeed. Looks like an excellent decision.

I was having a real problem with my provider when I switched to Starlink. It's been several months now and trouble free. I think over time you;ll be happy you made the change.

Just curious. Was the installation person from Starlink?

Thanks

The guy was a third party installer that works jobs for Geek Squad. He sure knew what he was doing, which was a huge relief. He also does work outside of the Geek Squad. Pretty much everything but rebuilding computers. I’m glad to have his business card.

Earlier, I forgot to mention that the WiFi signal doesn’t seem to have any more range outside the house than the Brightspeed modem did. Not a big deal.

Thanks. Idk why I didn’t think about Geek Squad.

How did you mount it? Directly to your fascia or ???

Sorry for the “personal” questions.

Took a while for the guy to find the right spot, which finally was on the roof, and sort of behind a Dormer. The wife wanted Starlink, but didn’t want something ugly and visible on the roof. She’s happy now.

One of the neighbors bought and installed his own Starlink, and after having watched it being done by the Geek Squad guy, it wasn’t that hard. But, I’m done walking around on the roof. And, even though I spent more money using the Geek Squad, the results were worth it, and I didn’t fall off the roof.

Dish is working as it should, as is the phone land line, the Roku, and all the iPhones and iPads. Dish required no changes at all. Roku had to be connected to the new wireless, and the iStuff too, and the installer did all that. I might have muddled through on all that, but he did it all super fast.

Only problem I didn’t see coming was the ADT alarm system. It seems unhappy that it lost the wireless signal. I’ll try to deal with that tomorrow.

“The wife not wanting something ugly on the roof” is what I am dealing with too. This is especially important to the wife since our house is a new build. The bad thing is from what I’ve read the dish has to have a clear view of the north which is the same side as the street … bang.

Thanks for your explanation. That may help me.

As an alternative to a roof mount, you could mount the thing on a short or tall pole. We thought about that, but I didn’t want to mess around with having to bury the line from the pole to the house.

Also, the flat ‘dish’ faces more upward than directional to the North. It might work on the back side of the roof where it couldn’t be seen from the road.

When the guy was ready to install the thing, I went and got the wife. She and he went all around the house, looking for a place he knew would work and one she didn’t object to. At each spot he’d use his iPhone to check to see if the dish had an unobstructed view. Apparently, the dish has a tracking ability, and doesn’t just look in one specific direction.

The unit comes with 50’ of proprietary line. If you think it’ll take more than that, buy the extra (rather expensive) line. The dish connects to a modem/router, which can be pretty much anywhere in your house, including the attic, as long as there’s a light socket to plug in to. Being a wireless setup, you don’t need to hardwire it.

If your local Best Buy has a third party installer, and I’m sure they do, get his number. He’ll probably come out and check what places would be best for the dish and not make your wife mad. Also, you’d know exactly what you’d need for the installation.

I think that’s all I know about it. Total cost, the way we did it, was around $1000.
