Most of the rich donate for a tax write off, not to help the needy. Not picking on you Buzz, just commenting on this statement which I have heard a bunch. I have trouble digesting that the wealthy just donate for a tax write off because the write off is less than the money leaving the bank. If I donate $100, I am giving up the purchasing power, savings power, or whatever other utility that $100 would have for me personally. In return, I would get back the marginal tax percentage that would apply to me. For simple math, let's say that is 30%. That means that if I donate $100, I receive a net deduction of $30 at the end of the day. Said differently, I am "losing" $70. The wealthy didn't get wealthy by giving up 7/10ths. Instead, I would argue that people donate either to appear altruistic or they actually care. This goes to JG's statement earlier -- it doesn't matter who knows if you're doing it for the right reason. This. Only way you get a head is if you donate cash at 5% AGI but get receipt for 30% AGI……. You don’t retain wealth by donating it

Really, Mrs Condescending?
I'm sure you know I pay a boatload of taxes per year. I am well aware that I have no control over how they are spent. That wasn’t directed at you. I was quoting your first line as I agreed with it. Sorry if it came across otherwise

I did always think, like, Beyonce just donated $2.5 million to the LA Fires. I "assumed" her tax accountant suggested to do this to cut taxes for her empire.

Besides our church tithes, wife and I look for opportunities to help individuals out that we hear about or run across - if you keep your eyes and ears open there are many individuals who get into a bad spot and can use some financial help (no tax deduction but who cares?)

Odd timing of the OP’s post…
In the opposite, I just accepted the first donation of my life today although I’ve made many myself
I didn’t ask for it, didn’t know it was coming although I certainly could use it.
I’m starting my own business and a long time, life long friend came to me…he is a multi millionaire and I’ve never asked him for anything ever. Never would.
He said he has watched me bust my tail, work multiple jobs for many years and wanted to bless me in my business venture.
He handed me over what many would consider a years pay.
Said here ya go, go kill it, I believe in you
I couldn’t believe it but feel extremely blessed
Helluva day

My discretionary, voluntary, charitable contributions fail to offset my involuntary, non-discretionary taxes - not just in value, but also effect. It’s like perpetually funding both sides of a conflict. The bureaucracies significantly fund themselves with very little trickle down to the needy. I directly fund worthy causes and am rewarded by the immediate impact.
My son-in-law questioned me feeding a pan-handler at our local McDonalds claiming that I was wasting monies. I asked my son-in-law “what makes you think that I did it for him?” Several weeks later, he commented that he recognized and now understood why I did it. It wasn’t for the panhandler, it was for me…

I give $1,000/year to the EOD Memorial Scholarship Fund. This is the only organization I trust.

I don't donate to causes but would throw in to the Amazon thing for teachers/classroom needs! My son told grandsons school to pound sand and stop sending fund raisers home, they charge stupid prices for items that are not worth what you pay and some corporate deal makes majority of money while the children are teased with junk prizes! Prefer to make donation to teachers to shop for class room needs and outright buy the grandson a decent gift!

I’m very leery of charitable organizations, I think most spend the majority on salaries and fund raising. But, I do often help out individuals and some organized charities.

I gave to Samaritan’s Purse for the NC hurricane relief. I’m pleasantly surprised I haven’t been inundated with emails or phone calls.

I don’t give anything to individuals. I’ve seen far too many take it and buy a steel reserve or found the same pregnant lady on our office porch the next morning smoking crack. I’m sure I’m far lower on the financial ladder than many of you though. We give to the church and I will physically help folks if I can but that’s it.

If it’s on your heart to give, then do so! It’s on the person who receives the gift to spend it in a way they can live with when it comes time to answer for it.
I learned this the hard way and now i give freely without remorse. Even though i try to be wise when doing so.

We don’t have any specific organization to give to. Generally childrens stuff.
I did something different through Texas Fathers For Equal Rights. I taught a lot of grieving fathers going through divorce how to deal with the pro Mama outlook of the divorce courts. If I could get to them early enough, prior to the temporary orders stage from the court, I could make a difference. Just say no or become a Disneyland Daddy. That’s when Dad can’t believe what’s happening to him even when it’s happening. The Judges don’t like a fighter but once you roll over and think it’s just temporary, you become a Disneyland(part time) Daddy. I knew a lot of judges that didn’t like me but they damn sure respected me for teaching guys the proper way to fight the crooked system.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

We don’t give to charities because most the money goes straight to the top and they barely give any to the needy. I keep humanitarian daily rations (MRE) in my truck and I hand them out when I see homeless people and we also drive around when it’s cold or snowing and give out old jackets, hoodies, gloves etc. we do not give cash. There was a homeless woman under a bridge down the road from our house on Christmas Day. My wife and I came home and got her a Christmas gift bag and filled it with MREs, water, and some gloves and hoodie my wife had that would fit her. A couple days later under the bridge she was gone but all her trash was there and sure enough the hoodie my wife gave her was just lying on the ground under the bridge. This drives me nuts. My son is in 1st grade and already had 2 this year and just brought another home. This one asks for emails and I put in 6 emails so he could get the first “toy” I told everyone I sent them to to not buy anything stuff is stupid over priced especially for the Chinese crap it is.

If you really wanna help someone, go out to dinner at a Waffle House or IHOP on Christmas Eve. I assure you, the people working there at that time (and likely all the time) are there because they need the work and the money. Leave a huge cash tip, then get the heck outta Dodge. But when the waitress chases you down in the parking lot in tears because she can now pay her rent or some other critical bill, it'll change your life.
The reality is that giving is for the giver, who is ultimately blessed so much more so than the receiver.

Fun with phone soliticers. Ask them what percent of your donation actually goes to the people and not to fundraising expenses. They can really tap dance.

I don't give to addicts, ever, as a rule.
That said, I will buy plate sale tickets from people I know, I'll donate time to help, and I give discounts to people who have served our country.
I donate rolls of second-quality (usually the dye color is off or the rolls have a random cut in the middle, etc.) Carpet to the shelters and I also give pieces of carpet out to people for their pets in the winter, but I have to pre-cut them and ask for pictures of the family pets, because I have had people come in requesting specific sizes and colors that are obviously just trying to get free flooring. Sad to think that even giving out carpet for cats & dogs has to bring the losers out of the woodwork.
Used to let kids come hunt my place for free as well, but with all the houses and stuff around us, we have to be more careful about shooting so we stopped doing that to avoid any accidents.
