Had a great hunt up in the Puget Sound area of Washington. Knocked out 7 different species in 3 days despite glass calm conditions 2 of the 3 days. I hunted with Tyler Grogan with Emerald Sound Outfitters who runs a 21 foot Bankes.
https://emeraldsoundoutfitters.com/Day 1 - was the best day while the wind was light we atleast had a ripple on the water to put some movement in the decoys. I spent the morning in the layout boats amongst a spread of scoters, bluebill, and goldeneye decoys. Ended the day with a whitewing scoter, surf scoter, 2 buffleheads, and 2 greater scaup. Watched hundreds of scoter come through the dekes that morning.
Day 2 - we did a shoreline hunt. Conditions were glass calm without the slightest of a breeze. Birds moved but acted like all ducks in no wind conditions. I missed an opportunity at a drake barrows golden eye. And passed on some single hens that came into the spread throughout the morning. But ended the day with a nice red breasted merganser and common merganser.
Day 3 - I was back in the layout boats, still not a wick of wind. I missed another opportunity at a barrows right at first light. He landed in the decoys and I water swatted the [censored] out of him but somehow he got up and flew off. I passed on scoters all morning waiting for goldeneye. The barrows eluded me but I ended up with 2 common goldeneye drakes and a stud of a common merganser drake.
If hunting trophy seaducks interest you I'd recommend this trip.
