Had a pretty brutal check this morning. Was 15 degrees with about 40 mph winds and 2-3 inches of snow from yesterday. No fur and spouse had 2 snares down. I'm going to adjust some of his snare sets Friday morning when we go back, lol. We plan to get some sets out from the highway as well for the weekend.
That coyote got skinned and will be fleshed and dried. Probably just get it tanned and if we get another with good fur I'll tan it also and make a bunch of real fur puffies for hats. I might sell the tanned hide if it looks good.
Usually by now we have a few inches of snow cover that will stay for the rest of winter. The coyotes usually have rubbed off their guard hairs and are not worth much. He still has decent guard hairs. We've had no real snow until this last little bit. Now wind will blow it around and be a real pain in the butt to get around and drift in sets.
Going up Friday morning for the weekend. Slight chance of snow flurries Thursday morning. Going to be clear and cold next 2 nights and not too windy, things should move for us.

What is a guard hair and how much is a raw coyote fur worth there?

Coyotes aren't worth much last year and this year. In the past a nice one might bring say $50 for us, better ones up into $100 from Montana. Had a couple of coyotes on our 1st check this weekend and then the wind hit again, had to be 50+ mph that afternoon into the night. Nothing Saturday morning but found some bobcat sign finally. Set some snares and coil springs out but not much movement last night- no catches or misses. Coyotes are going to get tanned I think unless a buyer offers more than $20. I'll sell them tanned.

Set some snares and a couple of coil springs on sign. 1st set is where the 2nd coyote was, I reset that trap. Next 2 are snares set on bobcat track sign near the creek, can you spot the snares?

Last 2 times up through the canyon area the sheep were on the highway. WG&F has asked us to and given us the ok to haze them off the highway when it is safe to do so. The canyon area has high highway mortality on elk, deer and bighorn sheep.

Forgot we staked out a beaver carcass we had in the freezer. We had the coyote carcasses nearby and the golden eagles, magpies and a immature bald eagle were cleaning those up. The beaver will lure in some predators we hope, we have some sets in the area. I'll get a trail cam on it Wednesday.

Not sure what we'll do about this coming weekend. Going up Friday and may just spring traps and keep snares out, checking in bitter cold is not fun or very safe, frost bite concerns. For us animals hunker down a bit when it gets frigid outside. By the 2nd or 3rd day they have to move to eat.

Well survived the check this morning. Was actually not bad, about 10 degrees with little wind. Yesterday had a nice female in a trail set, #7 on coyotes for us. Snow moves ina s we finished the check yesterday and we woke up to about 4-5 inches this morning. Spouse had a coyote dance all around a scent post set but not trap catch. Back up Sunday or Monday morning to check again.
