TTHA and SCI will be partnering to produce an outdoors extravaganza in Dallas at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on January 10-12. Looks like it will be quite the show with live concerts on Friday and Saturday nights.
I will not be able to attend as I am assisting on a mountain lion research project in South Texas funded by the Texas Chapters of SCI.
Adios,
Gary

Might try to go if it’s reasonable.

SCI owns TTHA if I'm not mistaken

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

SCI has employed the #1 feline researcher in the world to head this project, Daniel Scognamillo. We have no agenda, just want to get an estimate of populations, reproductive rates and movement patterns. Hopefully, the research results will assist the formulation of science based recommendations to TP&W for the development of policies for mountain lion management in Texas.
Adios,
Gary

There's a young man that lives out in the middle of nowhere in the Dryden/Langtry/Pandale area who grew up catching and killing cats (with his dad and his dad's best buddy Rocky McBride), and now does it for a living all over W TX, NM, and some in AZ. I've tagged along on two hunts my buddy has had with him for aoudad and WTX elk and is an absolute hunting machine, at age 26. He doesn't seem to have much of a problem finding them, so I'm betting there's a whole lot more of them around than people think. The amazing thing is the he and his family (3rd generation) grew up on this ranch down there, and other than finding and catching them with his dogs has never seen one just riding around goofing off.

What part of South TX? We had a couple incidents this year in the residential neighborhoods near where they're starting to clear. All these ranch owners are selling to developers and these younger cats ended up wandering into the city and getting killed by local PD.

Maverick, Zavala, Frio, Dimmit, La Salle, McMullen, Webb, Duval, Zapata and Jim Hogg are the counties that we will be looking at doing some research. If you know of any lion sightings in any of these counties, please let me know. We are meeting with quite a few ranchers now in an attempt to set a few cameras out.
Thanks,
Gary

Unfortunately i won't be able to attend, I will be at yet another (this will be the 3rd) family Christmas gathering and trying to sneak in a muzzleloader hunt, before I have a knee replacent surgery. So unless I absolutely luck into a spring turkey hunt, my hunting is done for the season.

Good luck with your research project Gary. That line up of counties should provide a few cats, saw some recent videos in Terrell County that had some of cats on the prowl, glimpses as well, of a family of black bears!

Looks like TTHA will have the same luck with the weather that SCI almost always had..... Freezing weather all week this coming week! Hope I get to go, as I always have liked the TTHA expos.

Plan on attending one of the days, as long as the weather doesn’t get too bad.

Had a local next door to our lease who works on a HF place in Mills county said they had a deer killed by a mnt lion. Didn't ask how he knew or what proof he had just took him at his word.

Our property owner showed me a couple of trail cam pics of a deer probably 13 years ago of a buck that had claw marks on both his hind quarters looked like he'd been grabbed by a lion.

I thought DSC moved to Atlanta for a few years because KBH Convention Center was getting renovated?

Yeah, I think TTH, more accurately, SCI, is swooping in for a little vengeance on the Dallas chapter that went rogue and left the SCI years ago. I don't know all the back room politics, nor do I care.

Y'all have fun in Dallas. It's always beautiful weather. laugh

Wasn’t worth the free admission.

Is this the same show that in Ft Worth in February?

Did anyone attend this event? I understand that traffic was pretty good but would like to hear from someone who was there.
No, this is not the same show that is in February in Ft. Worth. TTHA/SCI will have a show in Ft. Worth in August.
Thanks and Adios,
Gary

I went, despite the $35 ticket cost (it does come with a TTHA membership but didn't want/need it). I'd say 75% of the booths were overseas outfitters (Africa, Spain, etc.) with very little hunting gear. Went with a couple buddies that had never gone to a "hunting show" so we still had a good time. I heard traffic on Friday was non-existent because of the weather. We were there Saturday right after lunch and it was busy but not so busy you couldn't walk or have a conversation with an outfitter.

What show is going on in Ft. Worth next month?

Thanks for the report. I am not aware of a show in Ft. Worth next month.

Gary

I went on Saturday afternoon around 3:00. It was a decent show, slightly bigger than the usual TTH show in Fort Worth but definitely not as big as DSC. Lots of overseas outfitters and many of the usual vendors. A lot of outfitters and manufacturers had already committed to DSC in Atlanta and were not in Dallas for the show. Overall it was fun but only had about 1/2 of the cool stuff that DSC has to offer
